Bad contracts
« on: December 30, 2016, 06:25:01 PM »
Hey guys I'm wondering if you know when all of the bad contracts the Leafs have come off the books?  By that I mean:

- Phil Kessel - the Leafs are paying Pittsburgh a portion of his salarly, $1-2 million per season, IIRC

- Stephane Robidas - I seem to remember this guy getting paid to do nothing

- Nathan Horton - see above

- Joffrey Lupul - see above

- Jared Cowen - see above

There could be more.  Those are just the ones I remember.  Are any of them coming off the books soon?  Next season maybe?  Some cap space to sign some good defensemen and a backup goalie would be nice.  And then hopefully they won't make any more boneheaded moves going forward. :)

I just read that the Leafs will be paying Phil Kessel $1.2 million per season for the next *six* seasons!  Ouch!

Kessel is on the books to the tune of $1.2m until '21-'22.

Robidas is comes off after this season, '16-'17.

Horton is done after '19-'20.

Lupul comes off after '18-'19

Cowan's buyout is done after next season, '17-'18.

On the hook for Gleason's buyout until after '17-'18 as well.

Here's a good site for checking this kind of thing out, where it's all broken down nicely:

imo, none of the contracts are all that bad. Lou has figured ways how to bury them. Kessel was never gone help us win anything, so I don't count it as a bad contract.

My go-to site for years:
http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams/TOR?year=2017

Hit the "show more years" to, well, show more years.
