I hope he can break down the wall he's been hitting tonight.

"In our situation, we need him to be a dominant, dominant center for us. We think he's going to be by Christmastime. We think he's a very good player already, but we think he can be lights out with and without the puck. He takes a lot of pride [in his game]."
Babcock hasn't moved @AM34 to the wing because "I think he's that good," in that he's already figuring out how to be great where he is

What have you seen from Auston in terms of his play away from the puck defensively?

Mike Babcock: I think he’s been good. I thought last game was one of his best games to tell you the truth. I thought him, Hyman and Brown were real good. Played most of the game against Malkin. Malkin wasn’t in many of the chances. They had a lot of heavy shifts and good opportunities. He did a real good job there.

Don't think this has been mentioned really, but Auston Matthews is currently generating more shots on net than any other 19 year old in the past 20 years (via @coreypronman):

Marner's not doing so bad either of course.

Which bodes well with him really hitting stride once he shakes off this little slump. It won't be long. I tend to side with Babcock, that he'll be popping them in on a regular basis by Christmas.

4 of the 20 being from this year though does imply that there's probably some drop-off to be expected as the season wears on.

His shooting percentage is currently sitting around 9.5%, but I would think if you took that first game away he might be sitting at about half that. He's bound to break out here eventually. Right????

Shooting 3.5% since the first game of the season. We've seen this play out before, the goals will definitely start to come.

Less than half.

IIRC he had 4 goals on 6 shots that first game.  Since, he has 2 goals on 57 shots, for a Sh% of 3.5% since the first game.  He's going to break out, and soon.

The big question though continues to be: is he frustrated?  I really hope the media keep tracking this story, it has legzzz.

To be fair, he is:

- Despite generating plenty of chances, Auston Matthews has now gone nine straight games without a goal, picking up just a pair of assists in that stretch. "It's very frustrating," the 19-year-old centre admitted after Monday's workout. "I'm a player who wants to score, obviously, so when that stuff's not happening you definitely get a little frustrated, but you just got to stick with. I've been getting a lot of chances. Just want to stay positive and keep having fun out here."

Another 4-goal game and he'll be right as rain.
