I get that the contract isn't a complete anchor, but this deal just basically adds to a list of things I haven't been crazy about lately. In the last few weeks we've (in my opinion):

1) Overpaid for an unproven starting goalie, both in terms of assets required to get him and in the contract terms
2) Had a draft that focused largely on two things: overage players and size
3) Was one of the few teams to spark Stamkos' interest in a serious sense, so clearly their offer was legit (the pros and cons of this have been discussed enough though really)
4) Targeted two players on July 1st that address things like size, experience, and grit (Martin and Russell)

If you go back to last summer none of those things happened or would have happened. It's just an odd shift that I'm a little worried about.

I largely agree.  This, along with the draft after Matthews, makes me wonder how far Lamoriello really is from Burke's lineup vision.

Is this probably roughly what our line-up looks like right now?

JVR-Kadri-_____
_____-Bozak-Nylander
Komarov-Matthews-_____
Martin-Laich-_____

Sprinkle in Brown, Hyman, Soshnikov, Rychel, Marner, Michalek, Holland, Greening, Lupul.

That is my one real question going forward. The logjam looks out of control. We're not even talking about a guy like Leipsic being on the team after a really great AHL year.

Takes all types to build a team.  Skill, speed, size, grit....

Lou basically just admitted that the contract was for too much money. At least he's open about that.

And guys like Hyman, Soshnikov, and Brown are all players that Babcock seems to legitimately like, so I don't think he's going to give a veteran a spot just because they're veterans. I don't remember a time we've ever had that many potential NHL forwards coming into a training camp.

That's probably what I would LIKE to see.

edit: Swapped Sosh and Hyman because of handedness.

At this point you have to figure we'll see multiple trades.

I don't hate the AAV. It's a little high, but, not excessively. Having a $2M-$2.5M 4th line winger isn't the end of the world if you've spent efficiently elsewhere.

The term, however? No reason to commit to this type of player for more than 2 seasons. I recognize that would have meant he would have signed elsewhere, but, that's also not a big loss.

That's what I was wondering...get some more draft picks or help on defense

This signing is for the expansion draft only.  We need to expose some players.

I'll bet anybody that he'll be protected.

We have more skill already coming that we'll know what to do with.

This is a good sandpaper depth signing.
