Right on the money as usual there Nik, some 3 on 3 with a shootout or dangle competition to really see who is the best prospect.

I don't know why everyone is so quick to dismiss the swimsuit competition.

The best is the what they would do to save the world speech, followed by tiara crowning

I like what I see from him.  Handles the media well, well-spoken, very mature and composed.

ya me too, Laine came out and proclaimed he would surpass Ovenkin in 5 years, don't like to hear that kind of boasting..now I would choose Austin without any thinking about it.

Heard some comments from Laine talking about himself. There's a fine line between confidence in yourself and being full of yourself. Not sure how much of his comments are a language/translation thing maybe? English is not his first language so maybe his remarks come across as boastful. I'd still choose Matthews regardless if both guys said nothing at all.

There was an article in the Sun today that mentioned that Laine is taller and heavier than Matthews. Combine measurements have Matthews at 6-foot-2.25, 216.22 lbs and Laine at 6-foot-3.75, 201.3 lbs. 200 lbs is actually somewhat scrawny for someone who's almost 6'4". If we're checking off boxes I'd give Matthews the nod when it comes to size actually.

I remembered this article too about how Carter Hart is undersized from earlier in the year when looking at the combine measurements:

Quote
Among European goalie prospects, Swedenís Filip Gustavsson is the main attraction. At 6-foot-2 heís got the size, while his structure and technique in net are also excellent. While Hart is no shrimp at 6-foot-1, thereís something psychological about that one inch that puts him in a different class according to the scouts. In fact, if he were an inch or two taller, heíd probably be the guy.

That massive 1 inch gap Gustavsson has over Hart is actually just half an inch, as Gustavsson came in at 6-foot-1.5 (Hart was confirmed at 6'1").

3. Sean Day. Sigh. Okay, heís down 20 pounds at least from last summer. At 230 he still looks like a beer leaguer but itís a start. It didnít look like he bought into the idea that the combine was a chance to make a big impression.

He went from ordinary to very ordinary to below average at the stations, and seemed sort of nonchalant. You look at him and think: How does an unathletic kid possess plus-plus skating? This is one of lifeís mysteries and the reason that someone will undertake Day as a challenge.

4. No Patrik Laine in testing today. No Jesse Puljujarvi. No London Knights. Thatís a big dent out of the combine. Credit to Auston Matthews for doing the testing when he could have easily begged off, citing, oh, I dunno, a paper cut leftover from the worlds.

5. Alexander Nylander was leading the field in the Wingate testing, which no one saw coming.

Said one scouting director: ďIt might be that heís a safer pick than his brother [William, the Maple Leafsí 2014 first-rounder]. The older guy is a skilled centre who has a lot of skill, but youíre not sure about his jam. And if you try him on the wing, how is he going to be with physical play to get the puck? [Alexander] is a wing. He has a position and skill, maybe not as much creative stuff, but still way above average on that count.Ē

Williamís Wingate test numbers were also surprisingly good a couple of years back, but not to the degree of his little brother here in Buffalo. Itís one reason to think that maybe the younger will make up for fewer magic tricks by being the more dynamic skater and having a clearer role from the get-go.

[...]

8. Said one goaltending coach: ďIím at the combine and Iím in the meetings but I canít tell my GM that thereís a goalie that we can look at in the first two rounds. Maybe we canít talk about one until the third or fourth. Itís a very bad year [for goalies].Ē

My own observation: Meh.
