Johansen possibly being shopped.
« on: November 24, 2015, 08:35:24 PM »
Just read this and I kinda figured this earlier in the year. Due to slow start and Torts coming in as coach and then I heard some grumblings of them not getting along. If Johansen is getting shopped what does everyone think? What would it take? Should the Leafs try and land him? From looking at the Leafs the way they have played and I said this the other day they were unfortunate early in the season. They for the most part outplayed a lot of teams but nothing to show for it and I think that was due to goaltending early was weak. They have played both the Rangers and Habs twice. Two favourites to go all the way and I don't think they were outplayed in any of the 4 games. Scoring was going to be a weakness and it has. Getting a guy like Johansen a top flight good young centerman with good size I think the Leafs should be looking hard at a trade. I think he's the centerman we've been looking for for a long time. Just want everyones opinion. I've been thoroughly impressed with what Babcock has gotten out of this bunch and they way they are battling every night. Johansen would help immensely. Question is what will it take?

My take, if the Leafs made a deal for him would be that it would end up being the Phil Kessel deal part 2.

I'd guess that they'd ask for a ton, starting with Marner or Nylander +, at which point it would probably not be worth it.

Like SI says, they can't try and shortcut this. We saw that with Kessel, we don't need to go through it again.

Yeah, this is the opposite of the kind of move the Leafs are in a position to make. While Johansen is a very good player, and, yes, he's in the age group that fits into the Leafs plans, as others have said, the cost of acquiring him would be a step in the wrong direction and put the team further behind the point where adding a player like Johansen would actually propel the team forward enough to make it worthwhile.

Also, for what it's worth, the Leafs have definitely been outplayed in most of their games this season. It's just that, in contrast to how badly they were being outplayed over the past couple seasons, they looked at lot better. They've still been the 2nd best team on the ice most nights. They don't have the depth of talent to be able to afford sacrificing any potential future pieces for the present.

Yeah, I mean I would sooner take a run at Seen Stamkos in the offseason.

Yup. I mean, as much as I don't think it's the right time for that, either (or that Stamkos will make it to free agency), at least he'd come at no talent cost.

Could we do it without giving up Marner or Nylander? I would risk giving up our first rounder and some other pieces.  I do however like the way they are playing. Like I said goaltending early especially Bernier killed us. We have competed game in game out. At times we've been outplayed and reimer has got us some points. If we don't have to give up too much off the current roster, a young prospect in the minors plus the first rounder could that get it done. The team is not going to make the playoffs. If they can keep playing like this for the whole season and that is being competitive I don't think we will make the playoffs but the 1st rounder might end up being around 5-10 and I would risk giving that up. I know it's a good draft and would love a lottery pick but not sure if we'll end up there.

I'm hoping we have a shot at Stamkos and like Busta said that wouldn't cost us anything. Stamkos and Johansen in the lineup. Wow things are looking pretty good next year. Hey doesn't hurt to dream.

If you miss the playoffs you have a shot at one of the top three picks.  I would rather keep the picks and try and add more.  Ignore the results this year, ignore the results next year, but picture what this team might look like in two years with potentially two really great drafts with a lot of picks, and Nylander starting to assert himself, and Reilly potentially entering Norris talk.

Almost certainly not, no. Especially considering that if CBJ is indeed "shopping him around" then they have all of the leverage and can take the highest offer.

I was trying to figure out something that could exclude our kids, and maybe take Tyutin back...who the hell signed Babrovski to a 7.4mil cap hit?

EDIT:  columbus has only 5 draft picks for 2016....they're gonna want some picks.

Well, I think a good yardstick is the Kessel deal. To refresh, the Kessel deal was:

To Toronto: Kapanen, a 1st, a 3rd, Harrington and Spaling
To Pittsburgh: Kessel, Biggs, a 2nd

Now, keep in mind 5 things:

1. Kessel is/was 28, Johansen is 23
2. Kessel was coming off the worst season in his career, Johansen is coming off his best
3. The Leafs were severely limited in who they could trade to and were highly motivated sellers
4. Johansen, as noted above, is a big, young center with elite-level skills. Kessel was not.
5. Despite all of the above, many people thought the Leafs didn't do very well in the deal.

So, realistically, the Leafs would not only have to put together a package that is significantly better than the one they got from Pittsburgh, it would also have to be the best package Columbus was offered from anyone.

If you can see a way to make that happen without adding Marner or Nylander then you're one up on me.

I think you might be able to.  It would be something like two 1st round picks and Morgan Rielly.

They're missing a 4th and a 5th. I don't think that's the sort of thing that motivates a team.
