Report: Adidas has purchased the rights make NHL jerseys
« on: August 19, 2015, 11:00:14 AM »
I wasn't sure what to reference in the title (the White Stripes, Korn, or Jersey Boys), so I just played it straight.

Moving to a new jersey supplier may be a natural transition for the NHL to begin introducing on-jersey advertising, several league sources told TSN.

During a meeting of NHL team presidents in New York last year, league officials estimated they might raise $4 million per team – or $120 million annually – by allowing corporate sponsors to put their logos front and centre on jerseys.

“If you’re already deciding on a major NHL jersey overhaul, maybe with Adidas striping on the jerseys, then it seems like it would be a good time to introduce the ads, if you plan to do it anyway,” a league source told TSN.

Would the additional revenue stream result in a salary cap bump?

It would be revenue so, sure.

I think that's a pretty optimistic figure there. I don't think anyone is paying 4 million a year to get their logo on Hurricanes jerseys.

Yeah not on the 'canes jersey (unless there is a giant corporation in the Carolinas that just wants to own it). Averaged over the league though, it is plausible. LA, NYR, TOR, MTL, CGY, etc. would probably go for substantial sums.

Maybe. Although I doubt the league will have ads "front and centre' on jerseys. I could buy small patches, sure, but the full-on soccer model seems unlikely.

I highly doubt front-and-centre as well. Maybe the AHL model (upper chest corner).

Here are some well made mockups of terrible ideas:

Any chance the jerseys will still be made by Reebok since Adidas owns Reebok?

I thought I heard the NHL was going to seek one corporate sponsor whose patch would end up on all 30 teams' jerseys.  That may get complicated when it comes to conflicts of interest (ie. a RBC logo on a team whose primary sponsor is Scotia).

Either way, I hope this doesn't happen.  We are beat down with enough ads as it is.  At least leave the jerseys untouched.

I'm fairly certain that if ads ever replaced the Habs chest logo the Bell Centre would be instantly burned to the ground.

Like you said, it's much more likely to be close to what the AHL does:

No. Adidas wants the exposure.

No. Adidas wants the exposure.

And Reebok is being rebranded as their fitness line (i.e. CrossFit stuff).
Oddly enough, Adidas also has CCM under its corporate umbrella, which would make more sense.

Adidas may have purchased the NHL  jersey rights for next season, but for the Islanders it'll be their Reebok-inspired "Brooklyn"  third jersey.  Here it is:

That triangle with a "C" that isn't quite so discernible.  Horrible.
