@FAN590Walker

I've been told #Leafs are actively shopping Lupul, and it's very much in the plans for him to be dealt in the next week.

That's disappointing to me if true.  He's one of the veteran forwards I was hoping the Leafs would keep.

He's a secondary piece. The only reason to keep him is if you're not rebuilding.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of value Lupul has. That's a lot of money/term for a player who struggles to stay healthy. I agree with busta that he's a guy who absolutely should be dealt if they have the opportunity but that may just be about getting him off the books.

Are there many contending teams that would be willing to give anything of value for Lupul?

I mean adding 5.25 million on the cap for a few more years and taking into consideration his health, won't they have to basically give him away?

I don't know about giving him away, he's worth something, but the term may be a bit scary to buyers and the return is probably not worth it to the Leafs right now, though there may be a creative way to bring back some short term dead cap space to balance things out.

Also, he has a 5.25 cap hit but he's actually paid 6.75 next year, probably holding on to him for one more deadline at least.

That's kind of my point, I don't want him gone just for the sake of it and I can't see any team offering anything of value at the moment. If he has a healthy year next year, another team might take a chance on him at the deadline.

From hearing him talk, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders, I'd keep him for that too as opposed to just throwing away an asset.

Lupul might just be the toughest player on the team to peg value-wise. I really wouldn't be surprised by any return that he brings. His value is probably the lowest it's been since he was originally traded here, but he also still has so much potential to go on a crazy scoring run and be a big impact in the playoffs.

If the team is stripping down to a mostly bare-bones level, Lupul's a guy that I actually wouldn't mind hanging onto for another season or so. We're going to need some type of scorer to play on the top line, and Lupes is a solid character guy. It might not be a bad idea to give him some big minutes if Kessel is traded and see how he reacts. If he can go mostly injury-less next season in a situation like that his trade value would likely be much higher than it is now.

If you all think that rebuilding means no veterans you are all crazy. No team will every win will youth alone.

I'm having a hard time understanding the timing, as CTB mentioned....I'm not sure now is the time I'd move him, given his season.

I'd be surprised if he's moved this deadline.

EDIT:  saw Tigger say in another thread that his 5.25 hit comes with a 6.75 real salary commitment next year, so he's not even a cap positive player for next year.

I support going full rebuild.

I'd be disappointed to see him gone as I think he's one of the more interesting players on the team. When he turns it on, he's the most creative offensive player on the team (perhaps behind Kadri?)

I suppose his value really depends on which Lupul the other team thinks they're getting. I think he'd do quite well on Crosby's wing (or any good playmaking centre.)

I would be happy for a second.

If you all think that rebuilding means no veterans you are all crazy. No team will every win will youth alone.

Part of rebuilding is not having expensive, long-term commitments to players that won't be part of the team when it's ready to compete. It's not that difficult for a team like the Leafs to bring in veteran types on shorter contracts as UFAs. Also, part of the while rebuilding thing is not winning a lot early in the process. You also don't need to have veterans in significant roles to win. It's not about youth vs vets or anything like that. It's about having the right amount of talent and the right variety of talents. The teams that seem to be in a continual rebuild struggle with the latter.

I like Lupul a lot, but he's injured way too much. You can't rely on him to play a significant portion of the schedule. Let that be someone else's problem, whether it be now or during the summer...perhaps as part of a larger deal.

There are a few key questions to players and a rebuild:
1) Do you expect them to be a valuable member of the team when they are ready to win again
2) Will their return in a trade potential be more valuable at that time
3) Do they provide something to the team that is necessary
4) Is there personal value to the team greater than elsewhere

To me, the answer to all of those questions is in favour of trading him.  Lupul is a decent character guy, but when you are out of the lineup more than you are in it, that value is limited.  High value contracts prevent taking salary back in future trades.  Yes, you need veterans, but you can just as easily sign guys like Winnik, Santorelli, Robidas in the offseason and get that veteran presence.

Trade him if you can get something for him, even if it is cap space.
