FanSided: NHL Trade Rumors: James Reimer Could Be Moved Because Of Cap Reasons. http://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIw7dn6yCA

I could see us getting a nice return from Edmonton. I think his salary is very reasonable though.

We had that silly discussion about quality of sources...this would be one of those ones where the quality is not high.

This isn't really a rumour about Reimer being shopped/traded at all, but a generic speculation on the basis of cap crunch.  It all stems from the argument that you can't pay two goaltenders a decent salary and that it is wasted cap savings.  I argue against that line of thinking somewhat.  It's certainly reasonable if you clearly have a better and cheaper option, but it seems odd to me that you would be pinching pennies on your goaltending, especially in the setting of overpriced wingers.

Reimer is currently the 29th highest paid goaltender in the NHL.  Bernier is the 25th.  Combined the make 6 million a year.  There are FOURTEEN individual goaltenders who make as much as Bernier and Reimer combined.  And Marc-Andre Fleury is just behind that at 5.75M.

But to be honest, the Leafs are getting very little in return for Reimer.  He's 43rd in GAA and 33rd in SV%.  His stats are skewed by Carlyle throwing him to the wolves in back to back games (2.39 GAA, .933 SV%) but a team isn't going to just ignore those two starts.  Reimer is a goaltender with flaws in his game that are going to prevent him from being a #1 goaltender on a winning team.  I think he's a really good goaltender.  I think with the right defensive unit (one that can win puck battles in the defensive zone and doesn't allow guys to walk in unopposed to slam home rebounds), he could be a higher end goaltender, but teams like Edmonton aren't going to give you anything of value for him.

I can't see him getting traded during the season. No team will be able to offer what he's actually worth the team. Maybe in the offseason when we need to make tough cap decisions.

As long as Reimer doesn't demand a trade during the season, I believe the Leafs are content with the dynamic of the goaltending situation as is.

Also, there is practically no market for him. Two of the teams that you would think were in need of a goalie in the off-season are making due (Calgary and Winnipeg), and the other team is completely content with complacency (we know who). It'd be tough to get even a 2nd as things stand.
