NHL Jersey Advertisement Placements
« on: November 08, 2014, 09:51:38 AM »
So, there has been talk in NHL circles about placing advertising (corporate/sponsor) logos on NHL jerseys.   There's certain to be  varying degrees of opinions from hockey fans.

As we've seen, in Europe and elsewhere, soccer jerseys are adorned with at least one corporate advertising (across the chest).  Of course, soccer jerseys and hockey (NHL) jerseys are not alike.  Soccer jerseys' team or country crests are much smaller than an NHL-sized hockey jersey team crest, and also not as highly adorned with graphics a la NHL style.

International hockey jerseys (both team & country) are usually adorned with a number of different advertising placements, particularly those one finds in international tournaments such as the Spengler Cup, where the players are practically skating advertisements.  Jerseys here take on a garishness that's not easy on the eyes, so to speak.

It's doubtful anyone would want their Maple Leaf jersey altered, say,  by removing the design on the epaulets and having them replaced by a McDonald's logo, as an example.  Perhaps one would accept if the advertising were to be 'unobtrusive', at the bottom back of the sweater.  Of course, that would defeat the very purpose of placing the advertisement in the first place since it's meant to be seen not hidden.

Surely NHL teams will garner some form of revenue selling space for advertising on their respective jerseys.  The team honchos will definitely like that but to the fans it merely becomes a nuisance, to say the least.  There is already enough advertising everywhere.

What do you think?  Cast your vote and post an opinion or two.

I kind of wanted to select, "No, absolutely not.  I like my jersey as is."   But then this would be admitting to be foolish enough to spend any money on NHL merchandise.

This is something that's already done in the AHL and ECHL. Not quite as obtrusive as European jerseys. That might be the middle ground that works. My own preference is no chance in hell, but teams and the league see $$$ so it's bound to happen.

I feel we get advertising rammed down our throats at every chance that jerseys should remain one of the last things untarnished by a stupid corporate logo.

LOL.  If it means trading him to them in return for free books for each fan, then I'm all for it!  ;D

I don't like the ads on jerseys, make them look junky IMO. The Euro soccer jerseys are the worst with the corporate logos much larger than the team name/logo in many cases.

True, the team name/logos don't stand out on a soccer jersey the way an NHL crest does on a hockey jersey.  Definite differences.

Honestly, I'm game for whatever brings the cap up more. I do kind of hope that it's up to the teams how or even if they use these advertisements. Obviously teams like Florida and Ottawa who can barely pass the cap floor will need the revenue more than a Toronto or a Montreal. And I would also hope that teams with those iconic-type jerseys who aren't bleeding money would only maybe use them on their third jerseys or something like that.

The cap going up does nothing for fans.  Players just get bigger contracts.  Teams that can't afford it will continue to overspend with teams like the Leafs just making more.  I can't believe the NHL will tarnish our jerseys with such crap so mediocre players get to make more money and great players get even more rich.
