Marlies Training Camp
« on: September 19, 2013, 10:37:21 AM »
Some news from the Marlies training camp which started yesterday:

Gus Katsaros of McKeens posted an interesting article breaking down all the drills from the first day of camp. It gives a bit of insight to how Steve Spott wants the team to play. You can find the article here: http://www.mckeenshockey.com/nhl-blog/toronto-marlies-training-camp-drills/

Also, the Marlies have so far invited 4 players to their training camp on PTOs, and a there's a couple of names some might recognize. Stefan Legein, Wade MacLeod, Michael Neal, and Zachary Yuen are all on try-outs.

Legein is the biggest name of the four. He was a member of Canada's World Junior team that won gold in 2008. He was a 2nd round pick in 2007 by the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 2008 He briefly retired before his first professional season in the AHL, only to return after a few months. He's spent the past 4 seasons in the AHL and hasn't really posted impressive numbers.

Yuen is a 20-year old defenceman who was drafted in the 3rd round by Winnipeg in 2011. Some were a little surprised when the Jets decided not to sign him to a contract. He attended the Leafs rookie tournament this year. Neal is the brother of James Neal. He's 24 and was drafted in the 4th round in 2007 by Dallas. He's spent the past 4 years in the ECHL. Macleod is an undrafted 24-year old forward who suffered a seizure on the ice in an AHL game last season. He was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and missed the rest of the season.

I seem to recall reading some positive comments about Yuen in the last few weeks on Twitter.

I seem to recall reading some positive comments about Yuen in the last few weeks on Twitter.

Corey Pronman wrote this about him in an article about the top 2013 prospects that were re-entering the draft:

Zach Yuen, Defense, 4th round pick in 2011 by WPG (Tri-City-WHL):

Yuen is a solid, safe low upside prospect but one who does have a decent chance to be an NHLer. He played a ton of minutes in the WHL this year in all situations, but at the top level he projects more as a 3rd pairing defensive defenseman. Yuen skates at an above-average level, shows a fine level of work ethic, and tends to make good decisions with his reads. Hes limited with the puck. Hes not a horrible offensive player, but certainly not an NHL power play option down the line but can make a decent first pass.

Yuen was my #12 prospect for the Jets in the rankings I posted last summer.

Ranking: 5th-6th round

Of course he went unselected and became a free agent.

Thanks for that.  I can't find what I read (although I think it was probably by Corey Pronman), but I believe there were a number of comments about his hard hitting style.

The Marlies have named Trevor Smith team captain. Liles and D'Amigo will be the home alternates while Holzer and MacWilliam will be the road alternates.

The team also announced their opening day roster. It includes 14 forwards, 10 defencemen, and 3 goalies:
