General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Tavares
« on: June 27, 2018, 02:27:58 PM »
haven't read the whole thread but haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet.  If the offer is for 7 years and the whole idea is for JT to win, if thats his biggest draw to any particular organization than shouldn't the pitch be what the team would potentially look like in the back half of the contract?

For instance dubas could show that they intend on keeping matthews, marner and nylander so that in the last year of JT's contract when he is turning 35 those other 3 will all me in their late 20's still and should still make up the anchor of the best offence in the league.

to me that should be the pitch, John if you come to toronto they will be a top 5 cup contender for the entire 7 years (barring injury or lockout or whatever unforeseen stuff...)

Like what will boston look like in 5 years...no more bergeron, no more chara, marchand will be old.

same with SJ...even TB in 5 years pretty much everyone will be past their prime or at least near the end.

in toronto in 5 years all the stars are still smack dab in the middle of their prime..JT would literally be investing in apple as they are introducing the first iphone.

Jack Johnson for JVR, both on expiring contracts.

Potential targets: Dumba, Bouwmeester,

same kind of deal...jvr for green.  not sure how babcock feels about green though

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: The Lupul Situation
« on: September 22, 2017, 09:13:57 AM »
guys...guys...this is going to be very sad but borderline hilarious.  Lupul will be forced to play on the 4th line causing martin to go to the marlies for the week of games until he blows out his wrist or elbow being overzealous taking a drink from a waterbottle.

I mean its not like this guy is going to play a full season ever again injury free...he didn't even when he was "healthy" and was still playing yearly.  Lupul is no gary roberts.

At the end of the day I believe the team when they say he isn't healty enugh to stand up to the grind of the nhl schedule and him saying no second opinion basically seals the deal for me.

Just to focus on this but I'm pretty sure that's not what is being said when the team puts him on IR. "The Grind of the Schedule" implies that the wear and tear will eventually either render him less effective or unable to play.

Saying a player is injured, however, is saying he physically can't play to a reasonable degree right now. Not over time. You can't claim a player is "injured" because they're out of shape either.

no, I agree...poor choice of words.

clearly hes too hurt to play now...but I often wonder what the issue is that gets him on the LTIR.

he could have forced the leafs hand either by proving hes too good to keep off the ice or by going the PA second opinion route...so I think hes just not interested.

I'm simply pointing out that until we have any kind of evidence, anecdotal or otherwise to the contrary, why not take them at their word?

Well I think that we do have some sort of evidence here. This isn't a situation like Nathan Horton's. With Horton we KNOW that he has a degenerative back issue that's actually effecting his quality of life. He's given multiple interviews in the past where he's spoken about how his hockey career is over. Nobody is suggesting anything nefarious in that situation.

But Lupul's is different. For starters, do we even know what his injury is? The last we heard was that he had surgery for an abdominal injury. Is that actually something that can end a career? Because his social media posts seem to suggest that he's still living a pretty active lifestyle. Horton has problems picking up his kids. Also, in all the rare occurrences he's spoken he's remained steadfast in his belief that his hockey career is not over. And other players like Kadri backed that up last year. Further evidence? The other day he literally called the Leafs cheaters. I mean, what exactly does he have to gain by completely lying about that? Again, like I said before, I don't think there's anything really wrong with the Leafs "cheating" the system here, and I think Lupul understands that too. He was just frustrated when he said it.

I think though what is missing is all the stories of his burning passion to play hockey again.  There are no stories of him skating with jr teams to get in shape, there are no stories of him working with skills coaches and how he is in the best shape of his career; is faster, stronger and shoots harder than ever before.  Just some social media posts of tennis, snowboarding and the like (which also went dark for a year).  I mean, couldn't he come to toronto and workout on the ice during the summer and just show people how good he is?

Instead he posts pictures at other sporting events and doing leisure activities.  It doesn't scream pro athlete at the peak of physical conditioning.  At the end of the day I believe the team when they say he isn't healty enugh to stand up to the grind of the nhl schedule and him saying no second opinion basically seals the deal for me.

I don't really know that eating half of JVR's final year adds a ton to his value. Anyone trading for him is going to want to re-sign him and he's probably due for a significant raise.

maybe, but a team like carolina who have the cap space to resign him but money makes a difference might want savings this year and still be able to sign him long term.

also that could be a reason to include younger pieces in a package because it becomes a rental for JVR with longer term pieces in picks and prospects.

I wonder who would take JVR if half of his salary is retained?  could they get hanifin out of carolina?  I still think that trouba out of winnipeg is more of a pipe dream.

what if they packaged JVR at 2.1 million with their first round pick and kapanen/leipsic/dermott?

that looks like a pretty darn good package but I just don't know if there is anyone who would be worth that available.

I think maybe next year they can re-sign polak for cheaper than now and hopefully dermott can have an impact at the nhl level.

that makes RD: Zaitsev, carrick, polak,
LD:Rielly, gardiner, dermott

with marchenko/marincin/whoever else as off the bench guys

I've heard mirtle talking about Dermott making the team out of camp next year on a podcast so there it is.

I guess they could also try and find an upgrade at RD over polak and shift everyone else down on that side.

yeah, they played this on detroit sports radio and to be fair the hosts didn't buy it.  Their point was that Detroit has been bad for a few years now and babcock took a bad team to the playoffs for the last few years he was there.

Also, he won one cup and probably would have won the second if datsyuk wasn't hurt so yeah...you know what attracts free agents...winning.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Laich placed on waivers (again)

Laich cleared...

This is shocking.

That must suck for him to realize he's not wanted on any club.

I think its possible that a club is talking to the leafs about a deal that sends back a contract or where the leafs retain...but it strikes me as more of a see if anyone bites after he publicly said he wants to go somewhere else.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: William Nylander
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:12:31 PM »
I agree nik.  Of course I wouldn't mind trading nylander for [insert superstar defenseman name here] but ultimately if the value isn't coming back there shouldn't be a trade and I think the leafs brass will hold to that too.  This is why we won't see the leafs make any big moves this deadline.

That's all I'm saying. Trading Nylander is a bad idea but "Nylander's really good" isn't the reason.

But that said, if the Leafs don't trade out some veterans at the deadline I really truthfully believe deep down in my heart that they will be increasing the likelihood that they become a Colorado in a few years time.

how so?  are you talking hunlak who both won't be back next year anyway?  or are you talking jvr bozak who are maybe deals for the offseason anyway.
