Oh man, this has me howling!!!!

I don't know that much about Harrington, but he's 22 years old with 2 professional seasons under his belt. If the Leafs liked him enough to get him in the Kessel deal I would imagine it's getting pretty close to him playing in the NHL. Not sure how that would work though with Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly, Marincin, and Hunwick all being lefties as well. Assuming no one gets traded I would probably move Phaneuf and Rielly over to the right side and do something like this:

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Marincin-Rielly
Harrington-Polak
Hunwick-Robidas

If Phaneuf goes then Polak bumps up to the Gardiner pairing and Robidas plays with Harrington.

Although I haven't seen it mentioned, Polak has got to be near the top of the "those likely to be traded before March 1" list, no?

All joking aside, I think Hodgson represents just about the idea situation for the team this year.  Low risk reclamation project who, if he plays well, represents value and, if he doesn't, makes little difference.  Playing for a great coach on a young team with few expectations should be a match made in heaven for him.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Clarkson for horton

Didn't want to make this post longer than necessary so did not quote.

Look, ZZ-B, I don't disagree that Nonis likely deserves to be canned.  I just don't believe shedding a tear for MLSE is warranted.  I mean, no one is planning to crowdfund for the Steinbrenners, are they?

I also have to disagree that poor management decisions beget future poor decisions.  This isn't a one man show, ala Jerry Jones, Hank Steinbrenner, or the Little Ceasars empire in Detroit.  MLSE is a ruthless corporate empire and, I would suggest, they will make sure someone is accountable.

Anybody who thinks Nonis should get praised for this should think again.  All he did was take his own terrible financial commitment and kick it upstairs onto the MLSE books.  If I were Shanahan I'd be saying, "Thanks for getting rid of Clarkson.  You're fired."

I agree that his "great move" here is largely facilitated by MLSE's financial power but I don't think we can pretend that the decision to sign Clarkson was entirely on his shoulders either. There was internal pressure to improve and Clarkson was a highly sought UFA.

Remember, things "improved" so much under Shanahan that they then went out and tried to sign Bolland to what might have been an even worse contract.

Well, that tells you more about Shanahan than Nonis I guess.

No way should this be seen as saving Nonis' job.  $26M for nothing is not good management.

EDIT: and it wasn't largely facilitated, it was TOTALLY facilitated.

So, I can completely understand your contempt for the Clarkson deal given the salary cap implications.  But going on and on and on about the waste of MLSE dollars makes me ask the question: Larry Tannenbaum, is that you?

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Compete level!

I really only have three things come to mind as I read through this thread:

- First, I understand and feel the same frustration as most posters
- Second, I checked the standings and the Leafs have played 8 games this year
- Third, I really wish people would stop using 'compete' as a noun

I think this is less reactionary then you're implying. I don't know how many criticisms in this thread weren't being said in the same way by the same people at the end of last year too.

Maybe - or better yet probably - but I also don't think it's entirely fair to look at the 2013-14 and 2014-2015 seasons as a continuum, either.  Sure, we can look at Phaneuf's lack defensive of awareness as part of a larger issue with his character, personality, or ____, but there's also merit in simply saying "Hey, it's early" and develop more formal opinions later in November.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Phil Kessel and trade value
« on: October 26, 2014, 11:14:12 AM »
The Leafs would be a completely different team right now had they not made the Kessel trade or the Raycroft/Rask trade.  Dougie Hamilton proved that point last night.  Seguin is every bit as good as Kessel and is probably a better two way player.
I feel confident in saying that the leafs would have found a way to not draft either of those guys. The rask for Raycroft thing was pretty bad though. I wish management would resist trying for big name players all the time or the quick fix. I don't want Staal here at all. Kurvers , Nolan, Raycroft, Phaneuf, Kessel, Clarkson are all players that were all brought in under buy high scenarios that I felt didn't work out.

I get your point but you can't put Phaneuf in that group.  I'd also add that this sort of this is not specific to the Leafs alone.  We have the benefit of hindsight in assessing these deals.  Don't you think St. Louis or Minnesota are saying the same thing about some of their deadline deals last season?

I think you get it, although in these here parts we do refere to him as The Pylon.

Atta boy, Highlander, fight fire with fire.

I'm a glass half full guy, but I really see the value in Gardiner sitting out again.  I mean, ok, shake things up after a sluggish start.  The team wins a few games, which is great.  And Stuart Percy comes out looking pretty dang good in the process.  But, come on, get Gardiner back in the lineup, give Percy a night off tonight, then give Robidas a rest tomorrow night and get Percy back in.

Leafs Media Rumours / Re: Eric Staal in play?
« on: October 15, 2014, 10:04:39 AM »
Sort of off-topic - I agree with the majority who wouldnt't part with significant assets for Stall - but after watching the game last night I can't help but think that if Gardiner gets dealt it would be to a team like Colorado in a real hockey deal.  Something like Gardiner + for O'Reilly.  I think the days where players like Gardiner are traded for aging stars are gone.

So my family and I are proud owners of a fantastic Newfoundland dog.  We've been entertaining the idea of bringing a big friend for our Newf into the family.  I was looking on Kijiji for St. Bernards and came across this picture.  It put a smile on my face that I just can't get rid of  ;D.

(If anyone can put this into this thread, I'd appreciate it)
