Former Leafs: Ex-Files / Re: Kerry Fraser has cancer
« on: November 10, 2017, 05:52:50 PM »
How does Kerry Fraser, a guy who never played a game in his life and who made an error that may have cost us a cup, get a thread, and Eddie Olczyk, a guy who played 4 years for the Leafs, and scored a point a game in those four years, doesn't even get a mention?

Cancer sucks, and as much as I still resent Fraser for his missed call, I wish him well.  I've checked in here a few times, looking for updates on Eddie O, and not seen anything.  Being a PPG player in the late 80s, Ed Olczyk is a part of the reason I am a Leafs fan today.

How many are left in camp?

I'm heading to Buffalo to see the Bills Sunday.  We're catching tomorrow night's Leafs/Sabres game.

Am I safe in assuming that if a guy is in the lineup tonight (Matthews, Nylander), that I won't see him tomorrow?

Looking into it, I found a cool stat.

William wasn't the first Nylander to get 60+ points in under 1300 minutes.  Dad Michael did it in 2001-02 (although at a much older 29).

Welcome to the 6ix Patrick.

That is awesome!

Very nice.  Those Leaf jerseys sure look good on them.  :)

Way to go, Patrick!

Does anyone know the story behind the different number on the one kid's jersey?

It is, or starts with, 9.  It could be a Gilmour jersey, but he's too young to have seen Dougie play.  I doubt it's a Charlie Conacher jersey.  Glenn Anderson?

Was it just his jersey number?  That's the likely answer.  I just find it odd that he isn't wearing dad's number like the rest of the family.

I see the Leafs losing Marincin.  When he got in the lineup, he was a valuable, dependable D-man.   At 25, he's still young, and ready to contribute.

So, who gets win number three first, the Leafs (2-1) or the Jays (2-11)?

I feel good about tonight's game.  The team showed they can keep up with the Capitals.  They shut down the threats, and ultimately got beat by their depth.  If they can shut down the scorers again, I think they can take game 2.

Froese and a 2nd this year.

Is that a guess, or a rumour?

What's the over-under on how many times we hear the phrase "most important game of the season" tonight?  Who says it first?  My money is on Elliotte.

You know you've made it when the Iron Sheik takes time out of his busy day to tweet about you.

Will this be the year that the Red Wings finally miss the playoffs?

TSN Senior Hockey Reporter thinks so:
11. The lights will go out in Joe Louis Arena for the final time on April 9 without a 26th straight spring of Stanley Cup playoff action. This is the year the longest postseason streak in pro sports ends. The NHLs oldest roster will sorely miss possession driver and magic man Pavel Datsyuk, as coach Jeff Blashill hinted this week.

Lamoriello is the king of loopholes though.  If anyone can find one, Lou is the man.

I think I agree, Nik.  But are there any other options?  I am not up on this stuff, but could they lend him (or whatever the hell they call it) to a Euro team?

We'd talked about it before and I don't know where we came down on whether it was possible but I remember still thinking that would be a bad idea vs. keeping him in a limited role with the Leafs. There'd be no guarantee a Euro league team wouldn't bench him if he struggles, you'd be asking him to get used to a new country/culture and he wouldn't be getting feedback in terms of practicing/conditioning from Leafs staff.

I'm 100% positive it's Leafs or London for Marner.  He can't be loaned to a European team.  Its part of the NHL-CHL agreement.

It would not surprise me if Lou finds a loophole, and Marner spends a significant amount of time in the AHL on a conditioning stint.  I am not sure on the rules, but I think that AHL conditioning stints are allowed.

Do the Leafs have goaltending scouts outside of California?

Over the last 10 years or so the majority of non-homegrown goalies in the system have come from California based teams.

Vesa Toskala from San Jose (2007-10)
JS Giguere from Anaheim (2009-11)
Jonathan Bernier from LA (2013-16)
Frederick Andersen from Anaheim (2016)
Jhonas Enroth (assuming it happens) from LA (2016)

I'd have Peter Zezel somewhere in my top 100.  I haven't seen his name mentioned.  He brought a lot to those 92-93, 93-94 teams; timely scoring, shut down defence, incredible face-off skills (tied up the other guy's stick and won the draw soccer-style), and leadership.
