Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Auston Matthews

Matthews doesn't seem like the brightest or most charismatic guy in the world, but given the current trend of naming your best player captain, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that he'll get the nod.

So how much time have you personally, spent with Auston, to come to that conclusion? Or are you just making things up?

Moore has a goal in each game he has played.  Fehr has been phenomenal on the penalty kill.

Matt Martin plays regardless.

I wonder if HNIC is taking the Saturday. Either way, there's a good shot reddit will have us covered in some capacity.

Edit:

Saturday's game is Ottawa vs Montreal, no? So I don't think they'll televise it?

What's happening COL? Geez, Sakic said they WOULD get him signed. Ouch.

Interesting Lupul tidbit in that article.

Leafs playing Tuesday December 19th at 2pm

In Toronto, too.  That's a real head scratcher.

Apparently, it's the exact 100th year anniversary of the Toronto Arenas.  Still, what a weird time slot.

It's apparently the same time that they played that first game, almost 100 years ago. (I heard that on TSN 1050 or Fan 590, but can't remember which one, as I was switching back and forth).

Yeah, I am passionate about the topic, I should have shown restraint. Has nothing to do with fanaticism and it will not change the minds of those who believe. Only they have the power to open their minds and question the doctrine.

I believe you and I understand where you're coming from even though we probably don't agree on a lot of those conclusions. I don't know you personally and can only gauge based on what words are used and how they are perceived to be used, so a confrontational stance from the get go is only going to beget fruitless confrontation despite the dream of a rational worldview and a noble desire for others to stop hate and violence (which I definitely admire).

I think the way some things were said earlier could very easily have hurt some members here if it hadn't already. People are already at each others' throats for hot-takes on hockey; this topic is about 4-5 levels up the emotional intensity meter.

I will end on this note.

I too wish that more people would have internet discussions on the morality of religion vs science in a music thread and proceed with the same zeal and fanaticism decried against religions.

With great certainty, I can say that yelling at people from a keyboard and casting scorn and derision on their core values and beliefs is a time-tested and effective way of changing minds in a constructive manner.

Meh. The music thread was derailed when the topic of the bombing at a concert happened. Had nothing to do with music.
Could have been in another thread.

Yeah, I am passionate about the topic, I should have shown restraint. Has nothing to do with fanaticism and it will not change the minds of those who believe. Only they have the power to open their minds and question the doctrine.

22 killed and over 50 injured in a suicide bomb attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England last night.

I mean, I don't understand why you'd attack any kind of concert, but one that is primarily being attended by teenagers and probably mostly teenage girls is even harder to try and fathom.

Because all religion is a plague on this planet and should be abolished?

I know where you are coming from, but the root cause of the issue is belief mixed with crazy, and I am not sure if you can abolish that.

That is true, it's just my frustration at what people will do in the name of a 'god'. Far more harm has come from all religion, than any good it may do or may have done.

There is no end to this stuff, at least I don't see how there can be, with so many brainwashed people.

Maybe anyone under the age of 18, not be exposed to religion, but there is no way to enforce that.

I just wish that Science and facts were taught to everyone, from an early age, not religion. So maybe we can have critical thinking kids / adults, in the future. Our planet and future human kind, would thank us.

You must be joking. Replace it with what? Satanism?  Wherever there exists a void, it will be filled with another belief, demogoue, or other.

Every religion has it's extremes -- be it Christian fundamentalism or Islamic fundamentalism -- in it's various forms.  They exist everywhere all over the planet.

At the other end, there are sensible, practical people who are deeply religious yet flexible to understand how to apply the best and basic tenets of their religious beliefs to everyday life.

Evil's brand of religion isn't in the name of religion, which they  use as the excuse for martyrdom and revenge in it's most brutal form.

These people who apparently enjoy killing are either brainwashed or paid to undertake such dastardly endeavors. Who knows who finances terror groups?  Who is behind them?

Absolute cowardice.

Replace it with satanism? What????
Silly that you reference getting rid of religion, with a construct of religion (satan), which was meant to scare the population, and to control them with 'sin'....

How about teach people about facts and Science? Which I already referenced.

Not teach people from some fictional books and writings from thousands of years ago, you know, where there is zero evidence, which is why it's called 'faith'.  Religion was started because it was a way for a few, to hold power, over the many. Nothing has changed in that respect. Have you ever read the disturbing things written in the bible or koran.

All religion is the problem, there are so many too, there have been thousands of gods throughout history, but yet we still don't have any evidence for any. People kill for them and blindly believe in it. That is a problem, I have a problem with it, so does our world, as we have witnessed for a few thousand years. Killing in the name of.

This is a huge topic, which I wish more people would open their eyes too and discuss, but it's hard when there is blind faith.

I think our technology has advanced us past the point that most of humanity can handle.

I'm not so sure of that.

One small example, of fiction passed as fact, and people gobble it up, in 'Murica.
