Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Kasperi Kapanen
« on: October 12, 2018, 11:43:30 AM »
With Kapanen looking pretty decent alongside Matthews, how about a blockbuster between the Original Six great rivalry, Leafs and Habs.

Nylander to Montreal for Jonathan Drouin. Similar type players, solving Leaf's cap issue. Drouin becomes topline left winger either now or when Marleau retires. Habs with cap space get a guy who can slide into center ice.

I know the Leafs would prefer to shore up the defense but top d-men are hard to come by and there is some promise in the system with Liljegren, Sandin and Durzi.

I just thought this would make an interesting topic for discussion. I think Drouin might be feeling the pressure in Montreal and could use another change of scenery, and thrive with an offensively loaded team like the Leafs. Could he find the same chemistry with Matthews he once had with Nathan MacKinnon?

If such a deal were ever done, would a pick be thrown in by one side, and if so what?

But imagine the comparisons moving forward in Leafs-Habs match-ups? Would be interesting...

Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Huge thumbs down, Druin for Nylander? Really?

Nylander won't be traded, he will get signed soon.

Something I've been thinking about. How long does Mike have?

I'd say two seasons.
If he doesn't bring us the cup or finals, I'd say Dubas may pull the trigger.

Will Sheldon still be here with the organization then, to take over?

What say you?

(I think Sheldon will stay with the organization, on that appeal, to be the next one to run the big club, unless obviously some up and coming team, gives him a real fantastic opportunity, which I don't know who that would be).

Yeah, I don't get it.

Nik has made great points and people gloss over it.

Nylander will get his money, he is worth it. He is not being traded and is not being greedy.
Anyone else would do the same thing.

And all this"Sign Marner and Matthew's now" or "they should have signed Nylander last year" stuff, it doesn't work like that, not with these caliber of players.

They are betting on themselves and are not signing a deal early, when they know they have another year to prove their worth and get their money....

The deals will get done and all 3 will be Leafs for a long time. Book it.

About signing Nylander last year it's a fair question.  Lou was still GM, so it makes sense we wouldn't have heard anything if they were even talking to the agent about an extension, but the old "when you have time use it" crap that Lou spouted seems to have backfired here.  They should have tried to agree to an extension in the summer of 2017 with Willy like other RFAs did (signing their extension with still a year left on their ELC).

Dubas has made no secret of the fact he's already talking with Matthews and Marner's agents and he hopes to get extensions worked out before next summer, so hopefully it happens sometime in season.  They should have done the same approach with Nylander last year.

Just because they are talking, doesn't mean a discount and TBH, I would be very surprised if M & M signed during the season.
Their agents aren't dumb, again, this isn't middling players.

The numbers Matthews, Nylander and Marner are going to put up this year, will guarantee it won't get done until seasons end for M & M.

You don't know this.   Leafs and agents will use projections to base the framework of the deal, everyone knows what's up.  I have no doubt M&M will get paid but I think it can still happen during the season.

You are right, I do not know this or have any insider info.

But, with the quality of these two players and the depth of this forward group, leads me to believe that these guys are not going to user any projections and will allow their play to dictate their ask during next off season, IMO.

I will be very happy if I am wrong and they can get it done during the season, though.

We shall see.

I don't think Nylander would have signed last off season, after 1 full year and 22 games the previous year, makes no sense from his perspective.

"I know that there have been reports out there that suggested his body fat was as high as 25 per cent. I don't know if those numbers are accurate," McKenzie told First Up on TSN 1050 Toronto. "What I can tell you, and what I do believe is accurate, is that he was a good 30 to 35 pounds above his playing weight. So I don't know what percentage body fat he was, but I can tell you that the relative expectations of what the Lightning expect him to play at versus what he showed up as, it was a good 30 pounds."

If Ottawa was smart they'd put Bobby Ryan on a diet consisting entirely of cheeseburgers and milkshakes.
I doubt they'll get away with terminating the contract because he's out of a shape?

Depends on how it's worded in the SPC.  Which for Tampa to say it's for Material Breach of Contract, there must be something in the contract relating to fitness level.
Jeff O'Neil admitted on the radio he showed up to camp way overweight and Paul Maurice told him that he would have cut him loose if Antropov wasn't hurt.

Jeff "Snacks" O'Neill

"Is there ketchup on that?"

A little stressed about Nylander. $6M(ish) is the going rate. Get it done.

Ya I don't get it.  Only thing I can think of is Leafs want a bridge deal, Nylander is looking for more term.

I think that's what the rumor is right now.
Leafs only offering a bridge (why would they want to do that?) and he wants a long term deal.

I hope it gets resolved by tomorrow....  >:(

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Contracts for the Big-3

This is truly, truly amazing since pretty much everyone accepts that Marner will get more than Nylander does even though they essentially have the same value.

Nah, I can't be on board with the last part of that opinion.

I'll bet if you gave all the other teams the choice of either in a trade, the majority would take Marner.

I am a Marner fanboy, but I'd bet more would choose Nylander if only because he can play Center- the much more valuable position.

As for their value.  Yes, their value today should be pretty much on par.  However, Marner has one more year to increase his value before signing his deal.

And because he's signing one year later, with the cap probably going up, you can also state that Marner should get a smidge more money if they sign the same contract length.

Nylanders first year, where he played 22 games on that garbage team doesn't help.

Marner had the benefit of a better team, his first two seasons.

I like both players, but if I HAD to trade one (which I hope never happens), I would trade Marner.

While I'm thrilled with the Tavares for Bozak upgrade, one trade-off we'll have to live with is losing Bozak's shootout skills.  Bozak is career 41.7% in the shootout, vs. 27% for Tavares.

Won't matter when we're winning 6-2 every game.  8)

Whatever dude. I hope you rot in hell along with your troll friends.

Wow. You realize you bring this on yourself, right?

If you're going to claim there is a hell, you're going to have to demonstrate it.
Because to my knowledge,  none of those stories have ever been proven.

Hoping someone rots in a  make-believe place, isn't very scary or convincing.

Hey I just realized that John Tavares will be a free agent in 3 weeks.

Ummmm, no.  He will be a Toronto Maple Leaf.
The Stamkos thread reached 166 pages, Tavares is at just 10 pages... we clearly don't want him.

Shhhhh. We're trying not to jinx it. ;)

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Leafs Playoffs - Casual Fan Edition
« on: April 23, 2018, 02:14:06 PM »
I've been here since sometime in the late 90's.

I used to post more, years and years ago, but time doesn't permit me to really type out stuff with the accuracy and details I'd like. There are only so many hours in a day.

Yes, I myself had issues with Nik in the past, but, having time over the years to read almost every post, I can say that Nik is a very smart person, who writes well and seems to be well versed in a lot of area's.

Typing / text, has NO expression, you can't see the persons face or body language. Sometimes it can come across rude or brash or whatever.

I'm sure a lot of times, I was feeling butthurt with Nik's careful and well thought out / written, responses.
But that's on me, for maybe not articulating my point with info and facts and having my weak opinions shoved back.

Also, eye's lie, I like to watch games as much as the next guy, but just because (insert name here) 'Jake Gardiner' makes a mistake during a game (or even two), doesn't make Jake hot garbage that anyone would trade for a bag of pucks, I do like what all these deeper numbers show, analytics are a great thing. There is a reason eye witness accounts aren't the greatest things, people see / interpret things, wrong, a lot of the time.

As well, while watching a game on TV, you are at the mercy of what is being shown, you can not see the entire ice and any developing plays not on camera, it's is deceiving too.

Anyways, just my two cents, if you don't like what someone posted, don't read it all / don't reply, ignore, or you can always reply with your own facts and interpretation and not take offence to someone challenging your opinion. This is what a forum is for.

Just know though, if you post something basic, like the 'leafs at the best and are going to win the cup this year' and they've been awful for a decade, etc... the post is not going to have great responses.

p.s. If you think bar room banter doesn't turn into this type of stuff on the forums, you are crazy. My buddies and I just last week were in heated discussions at the bar, re: old school eye test VS. advanced stats.
