Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Auston Matthews
« on: Today at 10:50:33 AM »
After this year is complete, how many seasons does Matthews have before he would be eligible to become a UFA? Also, if someone knows and responds that would be appreciated, but if you could also tell me where/how you found this information I would appreciate it even more. :)

This is from the top of my head, so I could be wrong - but I believe it's either 27 years of age, or 8 years of NHL service; whichever comes first.

Since AM came into the NHL right out of the draft, the earliest he could hit UFA is 5 years after this season.  I believe he would be 26 at that time.

edit: 7 years of service according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_agent#National_Hockey_League_usage.  So, AM could actually be a UFA 4 years after this season.

This wasn't a penalty:

Some added context: Pettersson deked the pants off Matheson just seconds prior to this, so clearly Matheson was looking for some revenge. Pettersson left the game with an injury. With the way he fell onto the ice I'd guess shoulder.

It's been a while since I've seen someone attempt to give a Rock Bottom.

Two articles today that discuss the possibility of moving Nylander and some of the names that could be of interest to the Leafs. Here are some of the defencemen that are brought up: Hjalmarsson, Demers, Spurgeon, Manson, Tanev, Edler, Larsson, Nurse, Pulock, Skjei, and last but not least (ok actually least) Erik Gudbranson.

I don't think there's a single name on that list that I'd trade Nylander for straight up.  Nurse might be the closest, but I'm still hesitant.

If Kapanen scores 70 points I'll dance butt naked and post the video on these boards*.

* I won't actually do that but you get my point

I'll do it on Carlton's behalf.  :P

Would you trade Nylander (and possibly Gardner) for PK Subban?

Straight up?  I had to think about it - caveats about his age aside (he's 29 already...where does time go?), he still has this year +3 on his contract.  So, yeah, I would.  Nylander and Gardiner, not likely, though.

The question is though, a) does Nashville want to trade him? (my guess is no) and b) would they accept Nylander or Nylander+ in a trade? (I'd say no one first, maybe on the 2nd).

Good asset management is gaining assets with as little cost as possible.  If Nashville doesn't want to trade Subban, it would take a ransom to get him out of there.  Might help the defense, but you're detracting from another area to improve another.  Overall, it's not really an improvement.  The idea is to go after good players that teams WANT to trade, because they price is typically lower.  Like the Erik Karlsson deal, or the Phil Kessel deal, or going all the way back to the Joe Thornton deal.

If the Leafs view themselves as contenders, then it might be the time to consider acquiring an asset with their 1st round pick for next year.  But I don't think they should be trading Nylander, a piece who can help them win now.

lets just trade him for a defense man (Nylander) end the debate. He IMO will never be worth 8mil a year and the first three games have shown that we need defence.

Just my opinion.

The Leafs do need defense, but I don't think they need to or should trade Nylander to do so.  San Jose got Erik freakin' Karlsson for a couple picks and spare parts.  It's all about circumstance.  The last thing the Leafs should do is trade a star forward for a middling defenseman (Hall for Larsson anyone?).

I think we've had this debate before, but what would be the equivalent of a "Nylander" level player on defense anyways?  Ryan Ellis?  Sam Girard?  John Klingberg?

Kapanen, especially for his work on the 4 minute PK.

My new band has an album coming out in November, and we filmed an actual music video for it recently.  It was a lot of fun - if you like punk/hardcore/weird music, this might be up your alley:

(I noticed the youtube embed doesn't work anymore, so here's a twitter posting. :P)

It's weird to me that Kadri and Leivo had nearly 70% Corsi 5v5, but somehow Connor Brown was at 38%, considering they were on the same line for most of the game.  But yeah - Leivo fared alright!

Those numbers are actually from all-situations. At 5-on-5 Kadri was 63%, Leivo 62%, and Brown 54%.

You are right sir - I missed that!
