Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Nonis Legacy - Good and Bad
« on: April 12, 2015, 11:17:27 PM »
I have been looking at articles around the internet covering the period that Nonis was GM from Jan 9, 2013 to April 13, 2015 and it has not been very rewarding.  I then realized most here would know the answers so here it goes:

So what was Nonis's legacy for signings, trades and buyouts....both good and bad?  Was Burke responsible for any of the buyouts? Any brief evaluations on some of Nonis's decisions?

Buyouts:
Compliance:
2013
Komisarek's with only 1 year left on his contract ($3.5 MIL regular buyout would have been 2/3 over 2 seasons or $1.167 for 13/14 and 14/15 if I did the math correctly)
Grabovski with 4 years left after not being picked up by ANY team on unconditional waivers(Burke signing)

Regular:
2014
Gleason with 4 years cap hit lingering (after traded for JM Liles instead of buying Liles out)

Re-signed:
2013
July 5th Bozak -$4.2 x 5 years
July 1st Clarkson - $5.25 x 7 years
July 5th Bernier $2.9 x 2 years
October 31st Kessel - $8.0 x 8 years
December 31st Phaneuf - $7.0 x 7 years

UFA Signed
Raymond

2014
July 29th Gardiner - $4.05 x 5 years

UFA Signed
Santorelli
Booth
Winnick
Robidas

Looking for someone who might be a player agent or know the management or ownership of the Brampton Beast.

My son is looking to return to hockey and thought he would try with the ECHL as a 19 year old.  He played AAA high school hockey and led the team is scoring each year.  He shot over 90 mph standing still as a 17 year old at the Moncton Wildcats Bauer demonstration (compared to the NHL Allstar style of skating full speed into the shot)...infact only the 2 Europeans could shoot harder than him on the whole Major Junior roster.  He is a true 6'2" and a solid 218 lbs playing weight (currently he is 230-ish) RH shot....standing beside 6'0" Kessel he would 6'3 1/2".  He doesn't mind the rough stuff and can fight if he has too but has no interest in fighting because you can't score from the penalty box.  If he was brought in to be Colton Orr rather than Jagr he would probably leave the team.  He has soft hands and can stick handle in a phone booth.  He is a strong skater as well.

His only weakness is playing defense.  He is below average when caught covering for a defense man.  He can skate backwards and take the body, etc but he seems to over think it or something.  He hasn't had good coaching for a few years which is why he left hockey as he loves to learn.

Anyway I do know Alan Powers here as well as some others but I thought I would look to this community for help/advice.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Toronto Free Agents that are signed
« on: July 02, 2014, 07:51:07 PM »
I have been doing a simple 'yes/no' to indicate if Nonis handled the Leafs free agents who have been signed correctly but giving in to their demands or letting them sign somewhere else.

Should have added Gleason's buyout from $4 MIL on the payroll to $0.833 MIL this year.

Non-Hockey Chatter / K9 cries beside casket
« on: June 11, 2014, 10:02:37 AM »
http://globalnews.ca/news/1385832/fallen-mounties-k9-partner-cries-next-to-casket-at-funeral/

I don't what else to say.  The 3 main witnesses quoted in the papers are friends of mine (including Michelle), the slain K9 officer attended the church where we held my grand daughter's funeral 16 months ago and our law enforcement officers aren't part of some global conspiracy.  They are men and women....friends that we hang out with, laugh and enjoy....who have chosen a career to uphold the laws that we as a nation have jointly created and they put their lives in the way of danger to protect us.

General NHL News & Views / 2 deaths of NHL prospects?

OILERS PROSPECT PELSS MISSING IN LATVIA AMID FEARS HE DROWNED

"RIGA, Latvia -- Police say an Edmonton Oilers prospect has been reported missing and is feared drowned.

Kristians Pelss disappeared Tuesday, and local media reported that the 20-year-old player jumped off a bridge in central Riga into the fast-flowing Daugava River.

Rescue services spokeswoman Viktorija Sembele says her department received a call at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday that a man had jumped from the bridge. Police began an investigation.

Police spokesman Tom Sadovskis said Friday police had "suspicions" the man on the bridge had been Pelss, but declined to say why or give further information.

Pelss arrived home in Riga on Monday after playing last season with Edmonton's top minor league team, the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL."

General NHL News & Views / Potential Buyouts
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:14:46 PM »
Just looking at the NHL rosters and figuring what teams might take advantage of this gesture.

I don't think as many teams need option this as I first guessed.

I figure that there are the 3 categories: Most Definitely, Might, and Can't See It.

Most Definitely:
NYR - Wade Redden
Montreal - Scott Gomez
Van - Keith Ballard (At least: will still not be able to get under the $60 MIL cap next season)

Might:
Boston - Marc Savard??
Buffalo - Ville Leino
Chicago - Rostislav Olesz
Edmonton - Shawn Horcoff
Florida - Brian Campbell
Minnesota - Dany Heatley
NYI - Rick DiPietro
Philadelphia - Ilya Bryzgalov, Chris Pronger??
San Jose - Patrick Marleau or Joe Thornton (can't see both fitting under $60 MIL cap)
Tampa Bay - ???? (Also can't fit under $60 MIL cap next year)

NHL Transactions / Scott Hartnell signs 6 yrs @ $28.5 MIL Extension
« on: August 20, 2012, 07:02:51 PM »
Wow!  30 year old LW played all 82 games, scored 37 goals and had 136 PIMs.  He signed for less than $5 MIL a year.  Nice signing for the Flyers.  Starts in 2013.

NHL Transactions / Wayne Simmonds signs 6 year extension
« on: August 16, 2012, 02:54:35 PM »
Around $4 MIL cap hit a season for 6 years starting in 2013-2014.  He is only 23 years old, 28 goals last year  and one of the best fighters in his weight class.

Great contract in my opinion.

CHL & NCAA Hockey / Erie center plays goal
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:53:03 AM »
I thought this was interesting.  The kid get 45 shots (!) on him and makes 32 saves.  Niagara fans were classy as they cheered for each save trying to encourage him as a visiting player, the Ice Dog team all went out after the game to pat him on the back and the officials made him 1st star.

Cool story.

General Rumours & Speculation / Leafs Line up this year
« on: August 11, 2011, 09:10:50 PM »
I am speculating on what the line up will probably be this year.  I am hoping that Komisarek can be the elite tough shutdown dman that Burke was probably expecting and can take top pairing duties with Phaneuf.

On fight nights swap out Boyce or Kadri for Orr or Rosehill.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Overpaid Leafs
« on: July 21, 2011, 01:06:52 AM »
I noticed in the General NHL section there was some discussion on some current Leaf contracts that might be too high.

Some might get traded like Beauchemin, etc; some might not get re-signed like Giguere but what about the Kessels and Phaneufs of the Leafs.  When their contracts are up for renewal will they get pay raises, stay the same or drop in size?

Who do you feel is over paid on the Leafs and by how much?  Do you think that Burke will offer less on their next contract?
