Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Reminiscing About The Old (Bad) Days
« on: August 29, 2018, 10:36:24 AM »
I am not sure if there would be enough interest in this to make it a worthwhile discussion, but I will give it a try and if it works out that is great and if not, then sorry about that and it will fall away to the bottom of the board soon enough.  ;)

Today we are very fortunate to have fantastic management and players and a team that is on the right track in every category that anyone considers. Whether they win a cup in the next several years is unknow, but what is certain is that they are no longer the embarrassment that they used to be. I have been a Leafs fan since Grade 1 (45 years ago) when I would trade hockey cards at school and my only goal was to get the entire Leafs team and the team card. I did that every year for a long time.

I have some memories of being a Leafs fan, in the difficult days, that stand out more than others. The Ballard years, grocery bags over heads etc. all stand out. But my worst memory of those days was in January of 1987. I went to my first Leafs game when I was in college. We went with a group of about 8 guys and only 2 of us were Leafs fans. The rest of the guys were mostly Boston or Habs fans and only joined in for the night out. The team was below .500 but not as bad as the year before when they got off to a 1-12 start. Anyway, I went out with my Wendel Clark jersey and was quite pleased with the way the game was progressing. I think the Leafs went up as much as 5-1 by the second period. The problem that night, as it has been many times since then, is that the game was 60 minutes long and the Leafs forgot to show up in the 3rd period. They lost that night 6-5 in OT to Calgary. It was a particularly lousy night to be a Leafs fan.  :o

Thankfully, much better days are ahead.

I am wondering if anyone else has any standouts from over the harder years of being a fan.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Scotiabank Arena
« on: July 02, 2018, 11:34:53 AM »
It will take some time to get used to, but the ACC is now Scotiabank Arena. $800 million is a lot of money for naming rights.

I came across this blog which linked to the actual drawings for the changes. The most interesting thing for me was that the very large screen is about to get even bigger. It is currently 30' x 50' and it will be upgraded to 40' x 78'

Overall I think MLSE has done a decent job of keeping the building fresh even as it is now more than 20 years old.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Question About Leafs/ACC In Game Entertainment
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:22:40 PM »
I was at the game Saturday night. I'm very impressed with the music and on-screen entertainment during TV times outs etc. It's a lot more "fun" to be at a game now compared with even just a few years ago.

During the second intermission they played a video of clips (about 5 minutes long) from the past 100 years. I can find the video on YouTube easily enough, but not with the song they played it with at the game. I'm hoping that maybe someone here attends games and knows what I am talking about. Anyone? I'd love to know the name of that song.

Marlies & Prospect Talk / Ranking Prospects
« on: July 08, 2015, 03:08:32 PM »
I do not expect the Leafs to give us much to cheer about over the next two years, unless you like Tank Nation type cheering. What we can get excited about is the prospects, which over time is going to be a longer and deeper list for sure.

I'm wondering if people with better knowledge and insight than I have would be able to help start a discussion about the depth of prospects the Leafs have right now. How would you rank them? One to three are likely to be agreed on, but what about after that? Does anyone with the knowledge and the time to do so want to rank the top 10 or 20?

1. Mitch Marner
2. William Nylander
3. Kasperi Kapanen

Andreas Johnson
Zach Hyman
Frederick Gauthier
Connor Brown
Scott Harrington
etc. etc.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / More Front Office Moves
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:09:48 PM »
I guess after firing so many people they have to do some hiring this off-season.

The Leafs have hired Dr. Jeremy Bettle as their Director of Sports Science and Performance.

Not really a surprise, but here it is anyway.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / CapGeek Is Shut Down
« on: January 04, 2015, 10:08:13 PM »
This is a real shame. I am not even aware of any other place to get a look at a team's cap situation. This is a real loss for hockey fans.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Leafs Bottom 6/Depth Chart
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:01:54 AM »
Please forgive me if there is a better place for this or if it is already being discussed in another thread. I do not mean to start a new thread just for the sake of doing so.

I have lost track of the Leafs depth chart. Could someone here, who is more on top of things, show the Leafs depth chart, including the many options available to round out the bottom 6.

I admit to thinking about this scenario a lot. I was not aware that others were as well. But I guess the chatter is out there.

Lots of other threads talking about this guy or that guy being sent down or put on waivers.

Here is the list of the people who ARE on the team.

General NHL News & Views / Burke to Calgary?
« on: September 04, 2013, 09:24:55 PM »
There are rumours running around tonight that Burke may be headed to Calgary.

Chris Johnston - There seems to be more than a little fire with the smoke of the Brian Burke to Calgary rumours. Standby.

If that happens, I wonder if he will take Dion back in a trade.
