Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Komarov: Sell or Keep?
« on: November 20, 2017, 07:08:28 PM »
What's the argument here?  That Komarov isn't good enough defensively against OV and Backstrom?  I'm trying to sift through the sarcasm to extrapolate a point to this.

Pretty much any player is "replaceable".

Komarov has been pretty well established around here in terms of being a strong defensive and physical presence.  So if he's replaceable, who is the substitute we're suggesting could take his place?

The enjoyable banter that attracted me here 20 years or so ago is rarely displayed anymore.  This style of demeaning tone against Coco Puffs has a putrid stench that has driven away almost everyone I had considered friends here with only a few left.

I feel bad for how hard Rob, Darryl, Jay and especially Rick have worked to build a great community to only see it degenerate.  Most likely I won't be back but most of the movers and shakers here won't give a shit.

Or they just want a more flexible option for the 4th line. Put the Goat on Moore's wing instead of Martin, for example . . .

Jesus, if Babcock finally came to the realization that Martin wasn't an every-day NHLer only to replace him with arguably the 4th or 5th best potential replacement in the organization...
Allah, I know what you mean

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2017-2018

Gardiner + 1st for Trouba
JvR for DeHann
2nd + Carrick for Petrovic

Reilly - Trouba
Hainsey - Zaitsev
De Hann - Petrovic

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Komarov - Kadri - Brown
Leivo - Marleau - Marner
Martin - Bozak - Kapanen

I'm thinking the first two deals are overpayments, but I'm trying to overpay instead of underpay (to be realistic instead of a homer).

I was hoping that we could get Trouba and McNabb.

3 things I feel WPG needs:

SJS 2nd Pick,              Gardiner,                      Soshnikov             for    Trouba
High draft pick, arguably Leafs top Dman and a solid bottom 6 winger for a RHD

Bozak ($2 MIL retained) + Marincin for McNabb

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Komarov - Kadri - Brown
JVR - Marleau - Kapanen
Martin - Marner - Leivo

Reilly - Trouba
Hainsey - Zaitsev
McNabb - Carrick

Carrick is fiesty but 5" and 25 lbs lighter than Petrovic.  Not sure how good Petrovic is in comparison to Carrick.

I was wondering if McNabb could be partnered with Liljegren in the future and Carrick would be traded then.

Rats!  I am now distracted at work for the rest of the day.

I would love OEL.  Replace Gardiner and we are good to go.

You remind me of a Moncton acquaintance of mine who got stuck in an airport and recorded a video.

Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: Looking down the pipeline
« on: October 20, 2017, 08:22:28 PM »
Marner has done well at center this year in a small sample size and although all indications and predictions had Nylander moving to center next season I can see Nylander staying on the top line taking the occasional RH faceoff like this year with Marner moving to 3rd line center by next season to replace Bozak who was simply a NCAA UFA signing and could theoretically be replaced by a similar one.

Do you mean... Marner has looked good taking faceoffs?

Yes.  But he also has been willing to back check, etc which I would hope the center would do as well.

Looking ahead a few years, I see the Leafs current roster as including a core of players under contract for the next 3+ years or are almost certain to be signed long term, guys who'll definitely be gone, players that are replaceable and likely won't be here after their current contract is up.

......................

My thoughts... two holes in the top-4 is a lot to deal with so hope they find a way to keep Gardiner, they looking thin at center...

This is the way I look at everything including my role at my job as marketing manager for the Canadian Maritimes, my own life, my church and of course the Maple Leafs..... many years down the road....which is a curse and a blessing.

My hope is that the year that Matthews and Marner's new contracts kick in that both Marleau and Martin will be traded that summer on July 2nd as Marleau will only be owed $1.25 MIL ($6.25 MIL Cap Hit) and Martin will be only owed $0.75 MIL ($2.5 MIL Cap Hit).  They both have strong ties to the cities of the teams who drafted them so I suspect they could be traded back to the Sharks and Islanders respectively.

That would free up money for JVR to sign a long term (7-8 years) smaller salary ($5.0-$5.5) contract like is being reported that he is willing to do.

On defense I was thinking that the Leafs might be pursuing Igor Ozhiganov which is the 6'2" hard shooting, physical RD for next season.

Not sure about Gardiner as he still makes me cringe defensively but is really above average in everything else.  If he signed a Rielly contract then I would think he will be staying, if not then he can move on.

A few years from now that would allow a line up similar to:

Hyman / Matthews / Nylander
Grundstrom / Kadri / Brown
JVR / Marner / Kapanen
VET or ELC / VET / ELC

Gardiner / Zaitsev
Rielly / Ozhiganov
Greenway-like / Liljegren

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Your TML Rebuild Plan
« on: October 10, 2017, 07:35:02 PM »
I feel it will be Gardiner who might get traded at some point.

I see the talk of trying to get Doughty from LA but I feel that it would be difficult to handle without a major shakeup of the roster.

We have Liljegren in the fold already who is considered a Karlsson-lite.  It was reported that the Leafs have talked to Igor Ozhiganov who has changed his game from goonery to responsible offensive dman with the hardest shot at the KHL Allstar game   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t962QOidIAs&vl=en   and at 6'2" 210+ lbs he has size to play a heavy game.   http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/411-igor-ozhiganov-russian-defenceman-connected-leafs/  Hopefully he will be coming here this coming summer and is comparable to Trouba-ish and not Gudbranson-ish.

That makes the Leafs LH as Rielly, Gardiner, Hainsey, Rosen, Borgman and Dermott.  The RH will be Zaitsev, Carrick, Liljegren and possibly Ozhiganov.

In the 2019/20 season the Leafs have 8 players signed for $33 + MIL.  Not signed on forward yet are Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Gardiner.

Defense: If Ozhiganov does come and plays as well as Zaitsev then I could see him getting a similar multi year $4.5 MIL contract.  Gardiner hopefully signs a Rielly contract of 6 years @ $5 MIL per.  Liljegren should be ready to call up and will still be on his ELC.  Add a 6th LH dman for a $1 or so you have a $22 MIL defense

Offense:Hoping Matthews signs a team friendly $10 MIL x 8 year deal next summer to go along with Nylander and Marner signing team friendly $6.5 MIL 8 year deals.  In this scenario I would still like to sign JVR to keep the 2 duos together: Matthews/Nylander, Marner/JVR and Kadri/Brown.  JVR would have to sign for a $5.5 MIL contract at most with young 3 signing the team friendly deals listed above.

If JVR isn't re-signed then I see no replacement for his production in the Leafs prospects.  I really don't see any UFAs at his skill level and age ever coming available in this cap era.

The following summer Marleau's $6.25 MIL would be coming off the books giving room to re-sign Liljegren.

And yes, I do agree that Leivo would probably "help" more.  In games like last nights and against the Rangers, where the other team doesn't really have anyone you have to worry about getting out of hand- I see no reason Leivo shouldn't get in there.  Against the Jets (etc), Martin over Leivo is perfectly fine with me.

Yeah, this is basically where I'm at. I've accepted that Martin will never be a permanent press box fixture, and he probably wouldn't be on most NHL teams really. But with our depth there's no reason for him to play in every single game. Babs seems comfortable rotating the 4C and 6D right now even after convincing wins. Why not throw Leivo into a game once a week just to keep him fresh? Especially against teams like Chicago who really doesn't have any toughness to their game.

I really like Martin's honest attitude and work ethic but I also agree 100% with what you guys are saying.  Leivo/Fehr/Brown would be a decent 3rd line on most teams let alone 4th line.

Non-Hockey Chatter / Re: Depression and Anxiety
« on: August 16, 2017, 10:02:55 PM »
Thanks guys for your input, it is helping me out.

I'm hoping, in some twisted way it is anxiety and not another health issue. I think what is feeding the anxiety is after the first couple of episodes that happened, I've been worried it's a cardiac issue or something. I was at the hospital, a different one this time, last night and they did the EKG, blood work again, as well as a CT of my abdomen and chest and everything came back good. They made me an appointment for Friday AM with their internal medicine department to look further into this.

I woke up this morning feeling somewhat normal, the tightness in my chest wasn't nearly as bad, and other symptoms weren't there. As the day has gone on though, the tightness came back a bit when I went to the store, I also seem to be short of breath easily and have little energy, the little energy could be coming from eating only a little the last 4 or 5 days. Hopefully i can get some good answers Friday.

As CEO of a small media company I had similar things happening to me in 2013 into 2014.  It was completely anxiety driven which I didn't fully realize.  Chest pains, shortness of breath, tough to swallow, even arthritis that flared into gout.  I had been feeling caught in the company with no way out.  After stepping down June 2014 and taking deliberate steps to address some areas of my life it has gotten almost back to where it used to be many years ago before I got bought out and ran a mom and pop recording studio with my wife.

If you ever want to pm me I will respond when I see it.

Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: Ranking Prospects - 2017-18
« on: August 16, 2017, 09:28:36 PM »
Well, between the two of them it will be interesting to see who gets the more offensive role and who gets the more defensive role.  Kapanen hasn't proven yet what he'll be at the NHL level- will he be better on a sheltered scoring line or on the Kadri unit as a checking winger.

While my lineup above doesn't reflect it, I do wonder if Marner on Kadri's wing would work really well.  He's a puck thief and with some more work/experience could become more than just an offensive star.  Then we could ice a lineup more like this, where there is one of our big three on each line- the first two lines get the tougher matchups and it frees Nylander to be a huge weapon on the sheltered scoring line:

Marleau - Matthews - Brown/Kapanen
Hyman/Grundstrom - Kadri - Marner
Leivo/Hyman/Grundstrom - Nylander - Kapanen/Brown

I think that's where I'd take it too. Kapanen and Brown are pretty defensively/offensively flexible. Having similar on the left would be great, but we're lacking there.

I've always liked the idea of Marner on Kadri's wing (Knights!) to smear out the big three talent across the top 9, but I think there's a better fit longer term on Matthews' wing due to his propensity for shooting. We know Marner works very well with big shooting left shot centres.

I was hoping the Leafs would re-sign JVR and leave him as Marner's LWer.

When Komarov retires/gets traded I was thinking that Grundstrom would replace him.

Thinking that if Nylander is competent as a center at all then it will be Bozak removed.

So I was thinking the next couple of years would be:

Marleau / Matthews / Kapanen

JVR / Nylander / Marner

Komarov(Grundstrom) / Kadri / Brown

Martin / 4th line C / Hyman
