Not.  One.  Question.  Challenging.  Him.

I really think every serious media outlet needs to have writers who are essentially paid critics.  None of these pool guys will do it because they need to keep on Babcock's good side.  Whatever you may think of Larry Brooks as a writer, he got in Torts' face when he was in NY.  Can you imagine any of these guys doing that with Babcock?

And yet he shouldn't just be allowed to spin a mix of BS platitudes and blowoff lines like he does.  I don't think he's a bad coach but he and his team of assistants have made a lot of poor decisions this year.  Why can't somebody ask him directly to explain why he doesn't start OTs with Matthews?  Etc etc.

Managing expectations is the name of the game.

1.  Last year: New toys, fun fun fun, everything went right, just making playoffs okeydokey.

2.  This year: Toys no longer quite as shiny, Babcock turns off fun spigot, Matthews hurt NylanderMarner goal scoring down Marleau low on petrol Kadri WTF and of course POLAK!!!!!!!!!, jeez with a roster this talented we surely are in for a deep run right?  Right??

And I still wonder whether Matthews is fully recovered from his concussion.  His marvelous talent is still obvious, but yeah, he's not playing at his peak.

I know you questioned his play in OT but aside from that I thought this was his best game since returning from the concussion. Hopefully the bye week was able to shake off any leftover effects from that.

Not in the OT, in his last shift in regulation.  I'm not saying he didn't have a good game, he almost always does something good.  I'm just saying that I think something is still off.

I thought he had a  pretty good game but his stamina does seem to be off. Maybe he hasn't recovered yet from all the downtime or has a nagging injury. The bigger problem with that line continues to be the offensive black hole that Hyman represents. I know, I know - he's fast, gets into the corners and sometimes recovers the puck. But...he is not an offensive option when Matthews or Nylander have the puck, and that allows other teams to focus on them. They're playing 2 on 3.

Nylander seems off too in a strange way. I noticed a couple of times tonight when he made some of his trademark moves to get away from a defender, then kind of lazily threw the puck along the boards to no one in particular. Almost like he gave up on the play. I don't remember seeing that last year.

Whole team has seemed off for a while now. How can a team that is so good at penalty killing be so susceptible to last minute goals when the other team pulls the goalie...

That's it.

Ok, NOW can we try to blow up the lines?

JVR-Matthews-Nylander
Hyman-Kadri-Brown
Marleau-Bozak-Marner
Martin-Gauthier-Komarov

Puts Marleau in a more sheltered offensive role where he's better suited to succeed.
Re-invents the shutdown unit which has really struggled lately.
Gives an extra offensive pop to Matthews, who hasn't played poorly lately exactly but clearly we all know there's another level he could be playing at.

I think Nylander has, on the whole, been more dangerous than Matthews this year.  I know stats won't back that up.

When do we get to start calling Marleau washed up?

Kadri too, you'd have to add.  But seriously, Marleau has done very little other than contribute to the PK since November.

8
As long as Babcock is coach there is a low ceiling for this team. He coaches them to lose.

But they're well structured losses.

9
What does the OT matter, they couldn't close it out in regulation, again.

MotM: Brown
HM: Andersen

Is something wrong with Matthews?  I know he was at the end of a pretty hard shift but he looked like he was almost immobile there the last 10 seconds of the game.

You ever been out of gas?

He looked worse than that.

12
Just awful.  AGAIN.

Let's face it.  The Leafs haven't been impressive for 6 weeks now.

Jesus.
