Game Notes

TOR
ēAndersen (22-13-3, 2.67 GAA, .922 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
ēOne line-up change is expected from the Leafs: Dominic Moore seems like he'll be back in for Gauthier at 4C
ēIn the past 10 games the Leafs current forward group has a combined 48 points... that'll be interesting in about 30-ish seconds

PHI
ēMichal Neuvirth (3-5-1, 2.39 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Flyers
ēThe Flyers have been using a Provorov-Gostisbehere top pairing lately. Wow, two left-handed, highly skilled puck moving defencemen, they must be getting crushed... *looks up notes* yup, they only have a 57% CF when together this season
ēPhilly has gone 12-5-1 since losing 10 straight games early in the season. They currently sit 10th in the East and just 3 points behind Pittsburgh for the final wild card spot
ēThe Flyers' big-3 forwards are showing no signs of slowing down: Voracek and Giroux are 1-2 in the league in assists while Couturier is 4th in goals. In their past 10 games the 3 have a combined 40 points

Injuries

ēNathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
ēJoffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
ēNikita Soshnikov - Groin - Injured Reserve
ēNikita Zaitsev - Lower Body - Injured Reserve

Hopefully the Leafs offense will awake tonight and they can finish the Flyers in regulation.

That crazy idea that a Rielly - Gardiner should work...

It would literally never happen, but this defence would be interesting to see for awhile:

Gardiner-Rielly
Dermott-Zaitsev
Borgman-Hainsey

Or if Babcock wanted a more "reliable" second pairing he could go Hainsey-Zaitsev and then some combination of Borgman/Dermott/Polak/Carrick as the 3rd pairing.

So Iím listening to leafs lunch and theyíre talking about the reason the leaves are struggling is because so many players are in the drought. They seem to view the drought is the reason the team is in scoring and are ignoring the entire fact that maybe the style of play is causing the drought in the first place.

I think you can write off one or two players struggling over more than a 10 game stretch as a drought. I think itís a lot harder to make that same argument when itís the majority of the team

Freddy's playing so, so well. Been really sharp. Tops in the Leauge in TOI and shots/saves yet again. Dude is taking care of himself / 95 rating in durability. I think it's finally put to rest that the big Dane is a bona-fide number one. And at $5-million for another 3 years after this, a helluva a signing/calculated risk a couple years back. Well done Lou and co.

Probably a by-product of line matching. Babcock will only put him out when the Giroux line comes out.

Good strategy.  I like it.  I think next home game we should line match Matthews with the 4th line of the opposition.

Not sure I understand why the puck goes back inside the zone if it catches a Flyers player in the middle of a line change and bounces off his body into their bench.  Shouldn't that pull the puck to just outside the blueline?

Iíve been trying to watch for this. Is it because the opponent is having trouble removing their options early, allowing them to hold it across? Or are the Leafs doing something different?

Some of Philly's lines have seemed either more passive on the forecheck or too slow to press quick enough, which has allowed the Leafs more time to make the first pass in their own half, which as you know allows you to then hit the guy in motion cleanly and come through the NZ in possession and without having to hot potato it deep.

When they have dumped it, they've had time to be smart about where they dump it.

He's on the periphery of the conversation. It's just that there's this guy in Tampa having a fantastic year for the best team in the league, this other guy in Winnipeg who's suddenly good, and a number of the usual suspects having very good seasons.

Is Willie in the doghouse for something?

Babcock likes doing it occasionally. Mostly to reward Brown for his good work (Nylander really helps the 4th line exponentially too).

With 5 min to go he also pushes Brown up to tech for goal prevention. Lately it hasnít worked, but thatís the theory.

Brown has so much more offensive ability than Hyman. I still say that top line should be Matthews/Nylander/Brown.

Nothing to do with scared they just make stupid ass mistakes. Marner cutting in front of his own net on the 1st one and same line on the PP getting caught for the 2 on 1. No reason 4 of them going to the net. Flyers didn't deserve either one of the two goals.

Polak on the ice when we get hemmed in for 2mins. Defensive defenseman. Although to be fair we deserve to lose this now. Just puke worthy.

It's uncanny how often he's on the ice when the Leafs are hemmed in their own zone.

Polak basically skated all around the defensive zone on that last shift. For a second he was covering the opposing defenceman. That isn't a good thing.

I like the play style Babcock has.  I'm sure getting hemmed in your own zone for an entire period is a good strategy to get them ready for the postseason.

No kidding.  Brown says in the intermission that they need to keep the pedal down and not play in their own end all 3rd.  Executed that to a T.

Nylander has a bad tendency to puck watch 3-on-3. He's too talented not to have him out there, but, someone's gotta sit him down and learn him how to read those plays better.

That, and with the way they're going IF they can hold onto their playoff spot (something that seemed pretty much locked up not that long ago, but, with the way they're playing, I'm not comfortable assuming as much now), they're not making out of the division. This team cannot beat Tampa or a team capable of beating Tampa.

Even Mirtle's putting the blame on Gardiner here. I don't get it. Nylander and Coots are literally side by side at one point and Nylander abandons him.

Even when Nylander starts to slide over it's clear Gardiner can't just move over to Couturier because Nylander isn't catching up to Konecny, he would have just given him a free lane to the net.

I think ultimately the bulk of the blame is on Nylander, he decided early he was going after the puck carrier when he should have stayed with the other guy. But maybe Gardiner could have adjusted and shaded over to the middle a bit to compensate.

Overall, just another example of poor coverage in OT.

Gardiner is playing in the middle of the ice like he's supposed to in that situation. He's reading the developing play and giving himself options. If Nylander sticks to his man, Gardiner is well positioned to take away Konecny's route to the net. Once Nylander abandons Couturier to chase the puck, Gardiner is forced to treat the play like a 2-on-1 (which, admittedly, he played poorly). Nylander read the play horribly, and things compounded from there.

Def on Nylander, but Gardiner needs to share the blame just like he did against Columbus.
Take Nylander out of the play and what is Gardiner's job? What's a D man's job on a 2 on 1? Anyone?? Stop the f'n pass. No need to charge at the guy. In fact since Nylander was taking the wrong guy, he could have cheated over more towards the middle and let Freddie take care of the shot.
We're still 12 points up on 4th so we're still good. Even tho we've lost, we're still getting 1 point here and there. The ship will right itself soon.
Please please please put Komarov on the 4th line and promote Brown. He's just as good, if not better defensively and he has a scoring touch. Kom is killing the Kadri line because no one needs to check him...he's not going to score anyway.

Then Konecny has a clear lane to the net, as Nylander never gets to him in time - and we're blasting Gardiner for abandoning the middle of the ice/misplaying a 2-on-1, etc. Nylander put him in a bad position by chasing the puck instead covering Couturier.

They are both to blame.  Nylander for abandoning his position and Gardiner for poor execution of defensive position.  Gardiner had the opportunity of cutting off Couturier as he was coming toward the net.  Blocking the shot or staying in position instead of veering toward the puck carrier which Nylander was already doing.  Why double team Konecny?  At least if anyone had an opportunity to defend well, it was Gardiner as play got closer with Couturier on the side preparing for the eventual pass.  Gardiner decided to go the opposite direction.

Nylander surely read the play poorly in that unnecessary 2-on-1 giving the Flyers ample room to pounce.  Gardiner merely let them finish it by failing to either stay in position or attempt to cut off Couturier.  He did neither.

This really is mind boggling. Hyman's only strength is his play on the PK, at ES he's, what, maybe an average fourth liner? What could the point of playing him so much possibly be? They need more players skating hard, battling in corners and ultimately NOT getting the puck to the net or to a teammate? I'm at a total loss here.

And the sad part is, this isn't an aberration; Hyman and Komarov have led the forwards, or been right at the top, in ice time multiple times this year. That should simply never happen, especially with the talent and skill level on this team.

Nylander committed, very early, to the puck carrier, but he was definitely behind him too far to be much of a factor.  Gardiner was caught between a rock and a hard place there... I think he played it right and Nylander made the wrong choice.

But, he's still a kid learning, so I'm ok with that mistake.  But I expect better next time.

But again, choosing to cover the puck carrier and actually covering the puck carrier are two completely different things. Gardiner had to play it like a 2-on-1 the entire time because Nylander just wasn't going to factor into the play. I'm fine with people arguing that maybe he made too aggressive of a move at the end there instead of staying in the middle more, but arguing that he should have "switched" to Couturier is insane. It just gives Konecny a free breakaway.

I've actually been happier with Hyman's play this season. Last year when I wanted him off the top line I'd say he should be demoted to the 4th, but now I do think he could make a good contribution to either the Kadri or Bozak line. He's a fine player and at times will work well with Matthews, but he's overplayed and right now the lines need a shake-up.

But they almost certainly won't be sellers. If anything they might actually make a Boyle-like move to shore up their 4C or bottom defence pairing I think. And that's why I don't buy the "Babcock is just playing 6-dimensional chess" theories. This team is trying to win the Stanley Cup right now. That's their goal. They aren't going to sacrifice the future to make that happen but they also aren't actively holding the teams current performance back for future benefit.

Yea, I'd certainly have no problem with him on the 3rd line or, say, with Kadri in lieu of Komorav, but he shouldn't be anywhere near 19 minutes per night. I think 3rd line-ish minutes is reasonable. And, to me at least, Komarov shouldn't be getting anything more than 4th line minutes + PK time.

Sucks to lose, but I liked our game in general. Neuvirth was very excellent, and that's going to happen. He stuffed more than a few plays that easily could've turned into goals for us if the bounces went a bit different. The complexion of the game is a completely different if any one of those goes in.

Our goals against were
1) Puck stripped off of Marner at the goal side on an attempted breakout by a great Nolan Patrick effort
2) Powerplay high circle shot attempt blocked while too many forwards were crashing the net, leading to a nicely executed 2 on 1 (by skilled forwards playing PK)
3) OT breakdown after Neuvirth stops Matthews at the doorstep.

I don't know that any of these were system related, or even deployment issues (i.e. coaching issues), just straight up mis-execution.

Heads up play by Giroux as well to not try and instinctively keep that in himself (which would have made it a hand pass).

I'm guessing Gostisbehere yelled something too, as Giroux changes his momentum pretty abruptly.

I kind of wish the game could be televised with the chatter they have on the ice (I know that's pretty much impossible due to the expletives -- or expleetives as Romanuk called it -- and cross talk. We got a bit of it when Hainsey was directing Polak while the mics were hot.

The breakdown of the breakdown.

I read that and immediately said Nylander had no chance of influencing Konecny on his backcheck like Bourne thinks he can.  Gardiner made a poor decision, but he was forced into making one on a 2v1 because Nylander played it wrong.

Agreed - especially if Gardiner goes to Couturier any earlier. Konecny isn't charging in at full speed because he doesn't have a clear path to the net and he'll need to make a play with the puck from near the faceoff dot. If his path is clear, the gap between him and Nylander would have been much larger, as he'd be charging hard at the net - and, even as it was, Konecny was still out of the range of Nylander's stick.

Gardiner challenges Konecny too early, sure, but he should never have been put into that situation in the first place.

From the overhead angle, it does look like Nylander has little to no effect on Konecny. From the ice level angles, Nylander is a presence that forces him wide into no shot territory. And it's not like Nylander changed his mind partway, he was immediately looking and tracking the puck carrier upon the whiff from Matthews.

Watch Nylander's head (and then watch Gardiner's!)

Disagree. Konecny starts out wide, and it's Gardiner in front of him taking away his lane to the net that keeps him there. If Nylander stays with Couturier, Konecny stays wide because he has no lane on the inside. Nylander had no influence.

Completely disagree.  If Gardiner stays with Couturier Konecny can easily cut to the net , while protecting the puck since he's a right handed shot and Nylander is behind his left shoulder.  The only reason it look like Nylander can influence anything in that last screen shot is because Gardiner came across to play Konecny, so Konecny went a little wider and had to pass across his body.

Without a doubt Gardiner played that poorly.  But it doesn't absolve Nylander for playing it poorly before.  One bad decision leads to another.  Had Nylander stayed with Couturier Gardiner would have been 1v1 with Konecny.

It sounds like the crux of the disagreement is that Nylander a) is closest to Couturier, b) would have no effect on Konecny. I don't know that those things matter in terms of Nylander's decision making, especially in light of the directive for him to take the carrier unless told otherwise. Gardiner has a clear view of both A and B transpiring, so he could have easily waved Nylander off. Even if he didn't, he was in perfect positioning to shade the pass to Couturier AND force Konecny wider than preferred by staying where he was already positioned. Electing to challenge the carrier before Nylander could get back opened up a lot of passing room.

So we can fault Nylander for picking the suboptimal track (though I think he had a shot at harrying Konecny if Gardiner didn't press). Gardiner here had the responsibility and opportunity to direct this play and flubbed it.

I still disagree that he had a shot at "hurrying" Konecny if Gardiner didn't press.  All he may have prevented is a deke attempt if Konecny went backhand since Willy was chasing on Konecny's left side.

I also think "tracking" the puck carrier makes VERY LITTLE sense in 3v3 OT unless you are already on top of your man (ie if Nylander was already ahead of Konecny, not chasing from behind).  Nylander was GUARANTEED to stick with Couturier and wasn't guaranteed to disrupt Konecny.  It was a bad decision and I don't think its defensible.

I don't disagree with your/Bourne's assessment of Gardiner:

1.  He should have directed Nylander to stay with Couturier.
2.  Once he saw that Nylander was going to track Konecny he should have played the 2on1 more traditionally- which is trying to prevent the pass without giving Konecny a perfectly clear path to the net (ie, stay mostly in the middle)

However, I've seen a NUMBER of cases recently where Leafs D are being very aggressive on the puck carrier on 2on1's and I wonder if the coaching staff wants it... in which case, part of the blame goes to them for wanting that aggression.  Instances where this happened in just the last 3 games:

1.  Hainsey on the last Ottawa goal (after Rielly made his bad pinch).  Hainsey was really aggressive on the puck carrier.
2.  Gardiner on the St. Louis OT goal.  He went right at Dunn on the 2on1 leaving Stastny pretty much alone had Dunn passed.  Dunn was actually forced to shoot just inside the top of the circle but had a wicked finish.  Had Gardiner been less aggressive, Dunn could have walked in further for an even better chance.
3.  Morgan Rielly on the Philly Shorthanded goal.  Tried to block a shot/and take away the pass in one diving move and it went horribly.  It was quite aggressive and backfired.

I'm still okay with Nylander's decision there. He has a straight line to skate to cut off Konecny, who is taking the diagonal or an arc to get to the middle, and just the geometry of it means Nylander will intercept if Konecny tried to make a direct play. The directives are there to reduce decision making time. Communication is available to adjust to the situation when the directive is suboptimal.

I've noticed the aggression too. I don't think it's the wrong play necessarily as I much prefer it to sitting back and waiting for stuff to happen. I will say that most of our defense don't really execute it very well (yet?) and it's certainly not without its risks. Similar to the blueline auto pinch on the cycle, there really needs to be backside support first. Figuring out when to trigger best is clearly a work in progress.
