Eemeli Rasanen made Team Finland as well. They've got a pretty insane blue line, with 5 of their 8 defencemen being drafted in the 1st round. That includes last years 3rd overall pick Miro Heiskanen and Olli Juolevi who went 5th in 2016. He'll be in tough to get much if any playing time but still nice to see him named.

I'm keeping an eye out for Artyom Minulin, #5 on Team Russia. 6'2" RHD from the Swift Current Broncos. He went undrafted last year and I thought he'd be a decent pick in the middle of the draft.

Canada gets a pretty favourable call on their first goal. I don't think it should have counted, but, international rules and such, so, maybe?

He did have a nice quick up while the Belarussians were on a line change to give the Swedes an odd man rush that allowed them to set up sustained pressure for one of the middle goals.

So, Team Canada upends Team Finland 4-2 in yesterday's (Tuesday) opener, with Canadian 'keeper Carter Hart having made 29 saves.  Canada took the lead early in the game, a lead they never relinquished.  Some say "controversial".  On what?  On Canada's first goal in the opening period, that saw Canadian forward Boris Katchouk barrel in on not just a breakaway but into Finnish goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkhonen, after wristing a backhander that slid under Luukkhonen and into the net.

Interference, challenged the Finns.  Video review ruled it a fair goal.  The puck was already sliding into the net therefore negating Katchouk's "interference."

It seemed that this goal rejuvenated Team Canada and deflated Team Finland's mentality.  Perhaps so, but it was more the case of Team Canada making the most of their chances & opportunities and taking charge on the play.  Coupled with Hart's solid net minding, it wasn't difficult to see why the Canadians emerged victorious.

Canada is now 33-0-1 in opening games of the WJHC.

Canada plays Team Slovakia tonight.

GO CANADA GO!

Correct. He didn't play.   Might seem a little puzzling for Leaf fans expecting to see this talented prospect.  The Team Finland people claim he could be added to the lineup if needed.

Speed and forcing turnovers are Canada's staples at these WJHC and as one could see, Team Slovakia was no match for anything Canadian thrown at them.

Team Canada shutout Team Slovakia by a score of 6-0 and got offensive contributions from several different forwards such Jordan Kyrou, who not only leads the OHL but also these World Juniors, in points, followed by fellow Canadians Jonah Gadjovich, Taylor Raddysh & Sam Steel.  All at the top of the overall points order.

Colton Point, back up netminder played solid in net, in place of starter Carter Hart (who backstopped Canada in Tuesday's opening 4-2 win over Finland).

On the other side of the rink, Slovakia was outshot 54-20, with Slovakian netminder Hreniak braving the shot onslaught.

While the Canadian roster is relatively injury-free, three of Team Canada's key defencemen -- Dante Fabbro, Kris Clague, and Jake Bean are not necessarily in the best shape.  Fabbro is still getting adjusted here, while Clague took a shot off his foot, and Bean suffered a head-on collision on net.

Canada's next game is Friday outdoor against host USA at New Era Field, home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills.   Whether the game will go ahead as an outdoor one will be determined depending on the cold temperature.

I suppose so, yes, it would be but I think that many expected Switzerland to win by a slightly higher margin.   It can go either way though shots don't always determine the score or outcome.

Yesterday's (Thursday') WJHC results:

Defeating Team USA sure felt good, in Team Slovakia's 3-2 win, in the words of Slovak forward Martin Studenic, in what could be described as a thrilling victory:

Quote
"This is unreal," Studenic enthused. "This is like a dream. This is the first time I’ve beaten an opposing team like the USA. For our small country, it’s like winning the Stanley Cup. I’m so proud of these guys. We worked like a team, and we won...."

Team Slovakia's netminder played brilliantly in backstopping his squad in the win.  Certainly a goaltending battle between Team USA's Joseph Woll (a Maple Leaf prospect) and Durny.  And, thanks to what proved to be the go-ahead goal by Slovakia's forward Bucek, a rebound Woll had no chance on.

Elsewhere, Team Sweden held on to defeat Team Czech Republic 3-1, led by young defensive phenom & draftee Rasmus Dahlin; Team Russia beat Team Switzerland 5-2; and Team Finland handled Team Denmark 4-1.

Call it the "Buffalo Blizzard" or the "Snow Bowl",  as Team Canada and Team USA played before 44,000+ fans on yesterday (Friday) afternoon, at New ERA Field at Orchard Park, the home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills.  It was the first time WJHC history that an attendance mark has been shattered  as it was thedirst time a WJHC had been played in the outdoors.

Despite the temperature drop and the continuous snowfall that made for blizzard-like conditions, Team Canada and Team USA put on a classic of a World Junior game.

With Canada firmly in the lead heading into the third period, thanks to scorers suchas Cale Makar, Dillingham Dubι, & Boris Katchouk, it looked like the Canadians were going to win this one.  Then, the roof fell in for Canada, so to speak. Penalties after dumb penalty, at one point, the Americans enjoyed a 5v3 advantage, and before anyone knew it, Team USA had tied it all up in less than a minute, on goals by Perenovich and Tkachuk.

Overtime.  No scoring.  On to a shootout where Canadians were blanked and the US connected on two out of three.  Game over. 4-3 for Team USA.

Some of the Canadian players such as goalkeeper Carter Hart who made 32 saves, blamed it on the snow:

Quote
"When the snow gets pretty thick there and there isn't a shovel there for a while, then it starts to build up and you can't really see the puck very well," said Hart. "But it's always nice when we got the clears. It's quite a big difference when there's snow and there's not."

But it was no doubt in anyone's mind what really cost Canada the game, a lack of discipline that lead the way to the penalty box too many times, exploited by the shrewd Americans who found the holes in Canada's strategy and succeeded where the Canadians failed.  The timing could not have been better for Team USA.  Team Canada all but gift-wrapped the win for them. Ouch.

Much to the consternation and frustration of Canadian coach Dominique Ducharme:

Quote
"We had control of the game," said Ducharme. "We put them back into the game with bad penalties."

"We're killing that two-minute penalty early in the third period, there's about two inches of snow on the ice and it's a two-on-two and we're trying to go score," said Ducharme. "Turnover, comes back, and they score."

Okay, so the snow gets some other blame, but one cannot absolve the stupidity of the nature of those penalties in that third period.  Disicpline is where it's at.

A day after losing in the shootout against Team USA at an outdoor game in Orchard Park, Team Canada made no mistake in shutting out Team Denmark 8-0 yesterday (Saturday).

Canada got goals from Brett Howden (with two), Cale Makar, Sam Steel, Alex Fromenton, Michael.McLeod, Robert, & Drake Batherson, including Cal Foote with the three assists.

The victory ensures Team Canada of grabbing the top spot in their group. Canada will now play either of Team Switzerland or Team Czech Republic for the Quarter-Finals Tuesday.

He had a similar/almost identical hit in a game last week as well. Certainly not something that he's known for but it's nice to see that he's willing to get physical when he needs to.

It was pretty obvious to anyone from the start that Team Canada was ready to demolish the Team Switzerland with some good old-fashioned scoring.  And hey, no mind games here.  Got that Mr. Wohlwend?

Canada got goals aplenty from Brett Howden, Drake Batherson (with 2), Cale Makar, Maxine Comptois, & Conor Timmons, et al., in an 8-2 rout of the Swiss Tuesday (yesterday).

Alright Canada!

Team Canada didn't take the Czechs lightly.  Nope.  They sought to continue their offensive mastery in this Semi-Final, a day after cruising past the Swiss 8-2.  The Canadians made good their scoring juggernaut as Team Canada swamped Team Czech Republic by a score of 7-2 Thursday.

Led by Drake Batherson, whose hat-trick propelled him into a three-way tie alongside the Team USA's Kieffer Bellows & The Czech's so Filip Zedina.
Not just Batherson but other goals came from the likes of  Maxime Comtois, Sam Steel, Jordan Kyrou, & Boris Katchouk.

So, Gold Medal game here we come, as Team Canada faces off against Team Sweden, 4-2 winners in their Semi-Final over Team USA.

GO CANADA GO!

Team Sweden held back Team USA 4-2, thus earning it a berth in the Gold Medal game against Team Canada.

This victory happened to be Sweden's first playoff win at a WJHC against a US squad since the year 1996

Maple Leafs prospect Timothy Lillejgren had this to say:

Quote
"We played a pretty good game today," said Timothy Liljegren. "The U.S. had home advantage, but we've had a good feeling in the group for a while now. This was our goal all along, to play in the gold medal game."

Teqm USA niw goes on to play Team Czech Republic in the Bronze Medal game.

Some say the best team always wins.  For the most part that holds true, but, here at these World Juniors, the best team Team Sweden, that statement didn't quite measure up, not when it counted the most.

Team Canada defeated Team Sweden in tonight's Gold Medal game by a score of 3-1.

The Swedes outshot Canada in every period, yet the Canadians were given ample opportunity on five power play advantages to create some real damage on the scoreboard.  Even though Canada went 0/5 with the man advantage, they made the most of their scoring chances with some precise sharpshooting.

After a scoreless first period, Canada's Dillon Dubι made the most of a Jordan Kyrou pass, went on the rush, split the Swedish defence and high shot it past Swedish 'keeper Gustavvson.

Sweden countered to tie it a mere few seconds later.

With the game still tied in the third period, and with barely five minutes of regulation time remaining, Canada's Tyler Steenburgen's redirection of a point shot by Conor Timmons proved to be the winning goal. Team Sweden kept pressing valiantly, forcing Canadian goaltender Carter Hart to come up against some tough shots.  With the  seconds ticking down, Alex Fromenton scored the empty netter that Gold-sealed the win for Team Canada.

Ah, glory!  What a feeling it must be!

Congratulations to Team Canada on a job very well done indeed, a roster that on paper didn't seem to impress hockey pundits.

To Team Sweden, we congratulate you on a tremendously successful overall tournament.
Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs can hardly wait for the day Timothy Lillejgren joins the Blue & White!

Bronze Medal game:

Team USA soundly defeated Team Czech Republic by a score of 9-3, winning the Bronze medal for the third place finish.

US forward Trent Frederic led the US offensive onslaught with four goals.

Kieffer Bellows, the tournament goal-scoring leader, added two - - his eighth & ninth - -and shattered a Team USA WJHC record by surpassing Jeremy Roenick's own US WJHC record of eight goals set in 1989.

Bellows becomes the second-highest scorer in tournament history, alongside Markus Naslund's  (Sweden) record of thirteen goals set in 1993.

Congrats to Team USA.

i agree 100% with OldTimeHockey.

It is understandable under the circumstances that he would be bitteely upset with his country having lost, but losing here is not the issue but rather, how one faces it, and admittedly,  Andersson faced it with great emotion (openly crying). I applaud him because he wasn't just some muy macho guy bottling up and then taking it out by punching someone, or etc.  No.  But...

...here's where it that ends.  Throwing the medal away was a dishonour to his country, for the simple reason that he & his teammates were representatives of the country, not an individual.  It's as though he was making the statement by way of his eroneous action that Sweden's medal doesn't have any value or meaning to it.

Yes,  Andersson's a young kid.  While one had to feel sorry to see him so upset at the outset, he should thereafter have exhibited better sportsmanship being the Captain.  He didn't.  Therefore he deserves flak for his silly, stupid action.  Lesson, hopefully learned.

I also think those who keep saying Andersson dishonoured his country are a bit much. This was more impulsive than stupid (i.e. he didn't hurl it at someone's head).

Silver medals are the worst.

Wtf? Even guys who simply just took the medals off got suspensions? What a joke.

edit: So 3 of of those 4 guys aren't even eligible for the tournament next year and the 4th (Rasmus Dahlin) will be too busy elsewhere. So that's funny.

edit2: I missed the goalie, Olle Eriksson Ek, who is eligible for next years tournament. So he'll likely be the only player who actually serves a suspension.

I am in no way a fan of the IIHF, but I am glad they did this.

I understand why it happened, I just don't think it's acceptable behavior in a reasonable society.

Respect for the occasion and civility towards everyone who has worked to make this thing happen isn't a lot to ask for. For some that tournament was the culmination of a life's work and these petulant kids couldn't make it through the medal ceremony without acting out.

The adults deserve even more severe punishment.
