Google drills, making sure I preview and revisit posts before committing to jumping into publishing, practice holding words and links a little longer to see if there is a better potential post to make. I just have to grind it out, keep posting the way I posted before that got me here, and give it my 110%.

Herman your 80% is better than most of our 120%, your doing a great job, wish we had another 20 new posters that have done what you have done on your short time on this board. Hard to believe you are a Vet already.

We are both trying to attain Sittler Status as soon as possible, Herman with intelligent stuff and me being irreverent.

Rookie tournament this weekend. The Leafs play the sens squad tonight, Montreal tomorrow night, and Pittsburgh on Sunday. Sounds like MapleLeafs.com will be live-streaming it:

Woohoo!

Players I'm pretty confident in already:
Marner, Johnson, Gauthier, Dermott, Bracco, Timashov, Dzierkals

Players I'm hoping for strong showings from:
Lindberg, Brooks, Walker, Neilsen, Mattinen, Kaskisuo, Wong

Players I'm just curious to see:
Middleton

Not having Nylander, Kapanen, Matthews, and Zaitsev there will give some of the next tier players a chance to set themselves apart.

Well, finally, some 'real' hockey!  :)

Seriously, it's a way to assess what the Leafs have in stock from their prospects/rookie cupboard.  Looking forward.

Marner will be wearing #16 at this tournament, per Paul Hendrick.

I'm most interested in Johnson. I've just got a really good feeling about him.

Another player I'm very interested in but missed on the first pass: Nikolas Brouillard, a smaller offensive defenseman who went undrafted (all three eligible years) after posting 0.83PPG from the backend in the Q in the past 4 years in junior. He's currently on an AHL contract.

2-1 Toronto. Colin Smith with the OT winner in the dying seconds.

Not sure why he's in the rookie tournament. He looks a cut above (AHL vet at minimum).

A numbers thing? Not all teams will have 20 rookies around.

Probably more because he's from a different system. Gauthier's done what, 4 rookie camps? I think we have some 25 year olds too.

I'm guessing nobody's a real stickler for who's in these games or why.

As MLHS is wont to do, here is a very thorough write up profiling some of the players on the rookie tournament roster:

https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2016/09/16/previewing-the-toronto-maple-leafs-2016-rookie-tournament-roster/

I missed watching the game live, but judging by the threads online and the highlights and the stats, the Marlies are still aiming for speed and possession driven games. We're down premiere AHL finishers this year with the loss of Nylander, Arcobello, and Brennan so I'm modifying expectations accordingly. Still really good to see the rookie squad nearly double up on the Sens in shots even while carrying the lead for over two periods.

PSA: Andreas Johnsson is the correct spelling in English

He was too polite/shy to correct it earlier.

Mitch Marner attests he's NHL-ready and wants the chance to prove he "belongs"...

"This is Marnerís second chance trying to make the Leafs from the OHL. A year ago he feels like he didnít go for it enough; didnít allow himself to take the calculated risks needed to create plays out of thin air, his specialty.

"I feel more comfortable with the puck and a lot more patient with the puck," he said. "I just need to make sure when I come into the games I play the same way and Iím not stressed and can play my game."

ďI want to make the right play every time I have the puck."

If Marner can display the kind of wizardry he routinely did during his OHL career his NHL apprenticeship will be ready to begin and this will be his last weekend he plays hockey in London for years to come.

Have to say that while I'd still prefer there to be some sort of blue up at the shoulders the white jerseys are sharper than I thought they'd be.

Cameranesi stepping up a bit. Glad he got an AHL contract at least from that forgettable 2011 draft.

Middleton got a goal on Saturday on a throw in. He is huge and looks like he's still adapting to his body.

Johnsson looks really good out there, especially with skilled linemates (Timashov!).

Lindberg starting to look more assertive and JVR-lite.

Kaskisuo > Bibeau (small sample size). He's calmer in net.

Dermott is actually kind of mean on the ice. I like it.

Not too surprised we went 3-0 for the tournament. We held significant territorial advantage in possession and chances. A few rusty brain lapses here and there meant more goals in than preferred (Bibeau), without the automatic goal scoring we saw last year on the Marlies.

No one looked like they would threaten for an Opening Day spot in the lineup this year other than Marner but there is promise all over this tier of prospect.

Wait a minute.  Leafs lost Stu Percy for nothing!?!?!

At the conclusion of his entry-level contract, following the 2015Ė16 season, Percy was not tendered a contract as a restricted free agent, releasing him to free agency. On July 1, 2016, Percy was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins to a one year, two-way contract worth $575,000 at the NHL level.

If you add Tyler Biggs, that was a bad draft in the 1st round for the Leafs... I can only imagine that Percy was not Qualified as a RFA to clear a roster/contract spot.
But he could do fine as a 7th or 8th D in the NHL.

Nobody seems to think that at this point.
