Leafs Media Rumours / Erik Karlsson
« on: January 10, 2018, 01:51:54 PM »
General Erik Karlsson thread. Not sure where it belongs. I find this one fascinating. After Stamkos I've come around on these guys re-signing with their clubs long term for max dollars. Stammer, Price, I'm predicting Johnny T. This one has me intrigued. Melnyk vocal about being on a budget. Albatross contracts in Bobby Ryan, Phaneuf, etc. If their window has closed could be time for a complete rebuild. I'm guessing he stays, but anything's possible. He can't be happy with the way things have gone there this year, and what about the future...

Basically every team, yours truly included would be SALIVATING at getting this guy. So the question is, what would you send the other way? Stud D puts a lot of teams over the top. It would be hard but would you move picks, prospects, young players, cap space and anyone not named Auston Matthews?

Age: 27
2017-2018: $6.5-million (modified NTC - 10 teams)
2018-2019: $6.5-million (modified NTC - 10 teams)
2019-2020: UFA

Very sketchy rumours that the ten teams include areas in California, Tampa, even Detroit.

This quote inspired me to give him his thread. Jake's come a long way in two years. I'm sure there'll be an offensive play or two to put here during this Stanley Cup winning season ;)

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / President Brendan Shanahan
« on: April 09, 2017, 11:35:48 AM »

The hire. The mandate. The execution. Shanny appreciation thread.

After Burke, I had no expectations with the hiring of executive Brendan Shanahan by the MLSE. I liked the things coming out of his mouth, but of course, talk is cheap. Is this just another stuffed suit? A politician and glad-hander who has no idea what he's doing? Time would tell...

They started showing signs they that truly were going to build through the draft. There was the aggressive pursuit of Coach Mike Babcock and GM Lou Lamoriello, both of which have said that it was Shanahan's mission statement for the Toronto Maple Leafs that made them want to come here. He hired intelligent people and then stayed out of their way. After two-and-a-half years I'm now comfortable in saying that Brendan Shanahan is an excellent executive.

Lots of pics and footage from the practice and alumni game today so I took the liberty of starting a thread before CtB's tomorrow!

Great on them to have the old Leafs mingle with the new stars:

'Potvin said he spoke with Andersen and told the Dane how special playing in Toronto can be. "I told him how incredible this city is when you're winning," said Potvin, who backstopped the Leafs' back-to-back trips to the conference finals in '93 and '94. "The other sports are fine, but hockey in this city when you're winning? It's unbeatable."'

"For the first time in a long time, Iím actually excited. Iíve been away from it," Domi admits, "Now Iím watching like everyone else. [Coach Mike Babcock] has them on the right path. These kids, they donít give up. They play hard every shift. Thatís what I like to see. Itís what I notice most."

"When you hear people talk about the Leafsí young guys, they talk about how nice young men they are. Thatís means a lot to us former playersóto hear that theyíre good boys," says Roberts. He stresses the importance of a talented core in the same age range growing together over the years.

"Thatís what you want: an organization and team thatís a family. It improves the culture. Theyíre all battling through ups and downs together. Theyíre feeding off each otherís energy and experiences to become a better team, and you can see it."

"The guy sitting right here, Iíve been watching since he was 11 or 12 years old," Gilmour says of Marner. "He played against my boys, so Iím cheering for him. Heís a great kid. Before the numbers were retired, they were asking about 93. I said, ĎOne hundred per cent. If he wants to wear it, wear it.í "

Fun fact: Mitch Marner was born AFTER Toronto traded Doug Gilmour to New Jersey!

The dude is Methuselah! Happy Ninety-Two!

Happy fifty Wendel! Sharpshooter, bone-crusher, face-puncher... gave the best 5 years of his career to crazy old Ballard and terrible teams. Captured the magic later with Dougie and brought the city to it's feet! Hope he is well!
