That's how it's done when you attack in waves.

Edit: Matthews with an F you backhand chip into the far corner.

Exactly, the spirit of the penalty shot rule is that the guy is home free and tripped and slides into the goal. The referee then gives him the shot that was taken away from him for the infraction. I was under the impression if he managed to get some kind of shot off then or it wasn't completely home free then the referee would just give a two minute penalty.

The way the rules around penalty shots are qualified is that the infraction has to take away a clear scoring chance - so, getting a weak shot off or not being hauled down, etc., wouldn't necessarily mean it's not a penalty shot. That play, on the other hand, wasn't even a penalty, and it definitely did not take away the scoring chance.

Exactly, that's what makes it even worse. Generally, if there's any doubt whatsoever, it's a minor penalty. The fact it wasn't even close to being a minor penalty really makes you wonder how the call could have been botched so badly.

Doubt?

There is no doubt whatsoever.

This was not even a minor penalty. It was nothing.

This is why the NHL is a bush league: this type of unfounded call, a phantom penalty gets called while other more serious violations do not and then in the playoffs, manslaughter won't draw a minor penalty in most cases and never in the 3rd period.

Utterly, 1970's Russian refereeing.

Unacceptable then. Unacceptable now.

I mean it sucks that he lost, but it's really not a good spot for Carrick to be fighting.

I really don't know if Brown/Hyman are long term top 9 guys.

3rd line, maybe. Brown more than Hyman.

That's why I can't wait to see Matthews play with actual first line players long term.

Hyman seems like he'd be a great bottom line PK specialist that could fill in on your third line and not be a liability.

Ha

Leafs are playing anti-score effects right now, which is the best way to play defense.

Adjusted CF%
1st: 49%
2nd: 68%
3rd: 84% currently

That would be the ideal spot for him, yeah. He can still chip in a little offence on the 4th line, but he wouldn't be in a position where he's used as a significant part of it.

I do think both he and Brown could conceivably be 10ish goal, 25-30 point types on the 3rd line, though.

Clearly shoulda been a penalty shot for Rielly right there. Dean Morton is a doofus.

I think Brown still has more upside, he has gotten better consistently at every level he has played at and he's doing well for a rookie. He's going to continue working like a demon and I think he still has top six potential.

I'm really liking Nylander as F1 on the forecheck instead of Komarov.
