Big dollar long term commitment to players on the door step of 30 years old, I dunno, just makes me nervous.

This current group is sitting at 4th overall in the league 2 weeks before Christmas.  I know we all want them to win now, but I just don't think this team will be good enough or experienced enough for another couple years to win a cup.

I think with internal improvement, internal promotion, and the signing of maybe a tier B free agent dman or two, this team will be pretty good.

Having said that, if there is anyway possible Leafs could squeeze Doughty in under that cap, I would do it.

I agree. Guys can get old very quick in their thirties. If that happens to a guy you've committed 6-8 years to, it's albatross time. It's why I think a guy like JVR will walk cuz he'll want term but he's pushing thirty.

The Leafs superstar core is incredibly young. Internally and with the passage of time this team will continue to improve on it's own. I still consider this year a growth year. That said, the 1D position almost never comes around. I think everyone stays where they are. Keep drafting D and hope you get lucky.

Lads had their skate today downtown St. Paul organized by Gardiner's dad. In case you're wondering the two netminders are local HS students.

Who's beard game will be solid if we advance past the second round?

100% Auston is a serious 5-on-5 generator. Even nagging injury Auston, which he's been since before the first absence, is a contributor. At least the Leafs have the luxury of properly managing their asset. There's no way an Ekblad situation would ever happen, where Aaron was rushed back several times by a Florida club desperate to make the playoffs and suffered several concussions in a row. Kid will figure it out.

Alright I admit, I chuckled several times, nice Nik.

Gameday! Oilers played last night as well up in La Belle Province. Got another good shot at banking two here.

Quickly becoming a bargain and a very shrewd move by Lou and Co.

Matt Hunwick is so good he's suiting up for both teams.

For a taste:
Y'know what fascinates me about Auston Matthews, aside from his amazing talent, size, demeanor, background? The guy doesn't hit. Anyone. And he's 6-foot-3, 216. I watched this play below and thought, with his speed, at his size, he could've murdered this guy.

But it's kinda good he doesn't! For one, it helps him stay generally healthy. He saves his energy to actually play hockey. He doesn't piss guys off and make enemies. He's generally unflappable. He must be so frustrating to play because he embodies the phrase never let 'em see you sweat.

Matty's totally like Mats. When he got older Sundin would use the body positioning in the playoffs. It was real fun to watch. I think Auston will be the same way.
