NHL Transactions / Re: Domi to MTL for Galchenyuk

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/max-domi-brings-canadiens-alex-galchenyuk/

Berkshire takes a look at what Domi brings over Galchenyuk in the article above.  Mostly, Domi is a better setup man and the Habs lack that outside of Drouin.  He still thinks Arizona won the trade  (Galch is still a better player overall- 30 Goal scorer!) but Domi does address a bit of a need for them.  That they mismanaged the asset and devalued him so much over the past few seasons is pretty atrocious (for a Habs fan anyways... I'm fine with it ;) )

I do think the reaction has been a bit one-sided.  I'd prefer Galchenyuk for sure, but I don't think this is as lopsided as some other recent 1for1 deals.

So they addressed a need at Centre by trading a centre for an inferior winger? Does not compute.

No, they addressed the need to have a guy who can pass the puck into high danger scoring areas.  They also didn't believe Galchenyuk could play center for them.  I highly doubt Galchenyuk was going to bring in a good center considering how much they've devalued him.

Who will receive those passes and actually put them in the net?

Why the eggplant emoji?

Its replaced the banana as the go to Phallic emoji.

I thought it was maybe a True Romance reference.

The case for the Leafs could be that while they don't have consistent generational talents like Malkin and Crosby, it could be that if Nylander, Matthews, and Marner all have their best years over the same time period, then that might give the Leafs an edge.  If Rielly and Andersen also have their best years in that time frame as well, then it would only increase their chances.

But that makes it sound as if you're reading this "edge" we're talking about as just anything that a team might have that will help them win. But in this scenario, where Nylander, Marner and Matthews all have big seasons at once...is that significantly different than what Boston got this year from their big 3 forwards? Or Washington from theirs? Or Tampa? Or Winnipeg? We agreed it's probably not what Pittsburgh got from theirs so it's an edge on what? It seems like having three good forwards having big years is effectively the minimum requirement for a team being in the league's top 8, not something that gives you a leg-up on everyone else.

I didn't want to mention it, but now that Bob has broken this, I can tell you that I have been asked to be in the video.

I think it would only be right for me to solicit your opinions on what I should say...

"Hey John, do you want everyone you've ever known since Grade School bugging you for tickets? People scrutinizing everything about your life and how it relates to your on-ice performance?"

"How about dealing with an irrational, hypercritical media that will be quick to blame you for any of the team's shortcomings while demanding you give them the time they want? Or a rabid fanbase who will talk about loyalty but are so desperate for success they'll turn on you the moment it seems like you're not everything they ever wanted?"

"Lots of money though, right? Nah, despite the massive amounts of revenues you'd be generating for us we're not allowed to offer you any more than the Florida Panthers or Carolina Hurricanes. Wouldn't be fair to them."

"The Toronto Maple Leafs: Because the Uniforms are nice, I guess."

This is dumb but more teams probably do it than we realize.

Anyway if Matt Martin is involved in this in any way it'll be his greatest contribution to the team.

Ok... but when a team fires a coach (or relieves them of their duties) with term on their contract isn't that the exact same thing?

Well, no, because they're paying that coach exactly what they agreed to, no matter if he's coaching or not.

We don't know the details here, but if this extension was predicated on both parties agreeing to the 2 year extension, then Trotz is perfectly within his contractual rights to exit/not agree to it.

I get the feeling that this was not a contract extension that needed Trotz approval, and was automatically triggered.  If that's the case, then the Caps might have issue with it...but like any employer, what are you going to do, force the guy to coach your team?  Obviously not, so better they just allow him to move on.

Think of it this way, if the contract clause was automatic, and the salary ballooned to something like $10m, and the Caps didn't want to do it and protested, I think we'd all feel that then they shouldn't have signed the deal in the first place.

They'll just show him those Intact insurance commercials with Marner and Martin "how can you not want to be part of this?"
