Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Contracts for the Big-3
« on: October 09, 2018, 03:21:03 PM »

Winnipeg needs a second line centre and have had tough negotiations with Trouba.

Is Winnipeg a team that can afford to give Nylander $8mil though?

I'm not sure, but Trouba is going to be making 6.5 or so next year so there's not going to be a huge difference between the two.

They are probably facing a similar dilemma this summer with Myers as the Leafs are with Gardiner.

lets just trade him for a defense man (Nylander) end the debate. He IMO will never be worth 8mil a year and the first three games have shown that we need defence.

Just my opinion.

The Leafs do need defense, but I don't think they need to or should trade Nylander to do so.  San Jose got Erik freakin' Karlsson for a couple picks and spare parts.  It's all about circumstance.  The last thing the Leafs should do is trade a star forward for a middling defenseman (Hall for Larsson anyone?).

I think we've had this debate before, but what would be the equivalent of a "Nylander" level player on defense anyways?  Ryan Ellis?  Sam Girard?  John Klingberg?

Winnipeg needs a second line centre and have had tough negotiations with Trouba.

I think trading Nylander would be a mistake and I'm not saying I'd want to make a trade one for one but it seems like a better option than some names mentioned.

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2018-2019

Could Bourne be talking about Borgman perhaps? After making the team after training camp last fall other teams might be higher on him then they should be for a guy that is a 5-7 guy at best in the NHL

Karma.  Take that Bruins. Least likelable team in all of sports.
I think the New England Patriots could give them a run. I wonder if somebody could find a common denominator between those two teams?

Analytics guys seem down on him, but the traditionalists seem to like him.

Have "traditionalists" ever met a 4th liner they didn't like?
Sure, but fourth liners matter still. Is he a good fourth line/pk specialist with a bad contact or is he just a bad player?

He has Glendenning in our lineup  :'(

Yeah, I think it's pretty close to a sure-thing too. Especially since Gauthier looks like he dropped the ball in his audition.
I really don't know a lot about this guy.  Analytics guys seem down on him, but the traditionalists seem to like him. I get that his contact is too long and maybe half a mil too high, but what exactly is the issue with his play? The little I have heard makes him sound a bit like Komorov but a centre, younger and cheaper.

If it was something like Martin and a 4th for him would that be considered an OK trade? I doubt Detroit gets their asking price of a second rounder.

Wheee...

Roman Josi was also drafted with a pick (38th in 2008) that had actually originally belonged to the Leafs.  The Leafs sent that pick to Arizona in the Yanic Perreault trade, and Arizona later sent the pick to Nashville, who selected Josi.
The Weber pick was never the Leafs though. If Nashville received that for the belfour signing that was just a new pick the league created not the Leafs pick they had to give up for signing him.

I wonder if the market for jvr isn't as good as we hope. There isn't a shortage of scoring wingers available this year with Nash, Grabner, Kane, patches, Hoffman, Vanek etc all more likely to be traded than jvr is

Every time I hear the announcers mention Pulock my heart skips a beat before my brain remembers Polak isn't playing

I can handle Komorov as a fourth line pk specialist who can fill in higher in case of an injury. I'd be ok with him getting resigned to play that role, I just don't trust Babcock to keep him in that role of he is resigned unfortunately. The guy should not be in the top 9 on this team.

Someone actually looked into this in detail yesterday: --snip--

PK% is just like +/-, in that the events are so rare it's hard to get a stable reading for anything predictive. Even shot shares are spiky and highly dependent on deployment.

A deeper cut would probably have to look at PK xG data and some heat maps.

... snip...

I'm not entirely sure how to read these, but dark green is good, right? If Polak is playing the right d position then these are saying he actually is good at suppressing shots in his area of coverage on the pk, don't they?

Of course there is more involved then just this to say whether he is actually good on the pk or not (shot clearings, time spent in the d zone etc) but I'd rather not see any info that might lead to somebody defending Polak's usage :(

NHL Transactions / Re: 2017-18 Minor Transactions Thread
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:57:04 PM »
Cammalleri being traded for Jokinen only getting mentioned under the minor transactions thread makes me feel old.

It can't be that long ago that this would have been a major deal, can it? Maybe I don't want the answer to that.

Oh.
That's, uh, not a good thing for the people in power to be throwing out there as a possibility

What more can be said about this team? Absolutely unreal talent, I've never enjoyed watching hockey as much as I enjoy watching these kids
