That rink being out in Kanata has always been a problem.

They're building a new one, at least that's what I've been told, in the downtown area.

It's always been a problem in as much it makes it inconvenient for fans but before this season it's never really been a noticeable attendance issue. They've always been at 95% or so at ESPN until this year.

Yeah, I don't care if they need to answer 3 questions from a troll under a bridge to get there, a playoff game needs to be sold out.

It's really not that big a deal anymore. When it was first built, it was definitely out in the middle of nowhere, but the city has expanded a lot, and it's fairly easily accessible (by Ottawa standards, at least). There's a number of bus routes that go that way, it's right off the highway, etc. There are now a number of restaurant options nearby. A pre-season game might not be enough of a draw for people to make the journey, but they should easily be able to fill the thing for a 2nd round playoff game.

The new rink is going downtown.  Melnyk negotiated to get some land down there.  Whole new complex is going in which will be under control by the Senators.  I am not sure if it is 100% finalized yet though.

The attendance this year has been bad.  I was at 5 or 6 games this year, and large swathes of the rink were empty in all of them.  I think the announced attendance for one of the games, early on in the season, was 14000.

There are several theories as to why this is happening.  I think at the end of the day, it's just cheaper for fans to watch the game at home.

NYRangers  5.  Senators   6   2OT    Ottawa leads series 2 games to 0.

For Ottawa's Jean Gabriel Pageau, this game was a dream come true.  Not only did Pageau score the overtime winning goal, but add four goals on the night to his playoff resume.  That's right, four goals, as his Ottawa Senators emerged victorious in the second OT of this wildly entertaining game Saturday night here at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Not that the Senators even deserved the win, considering that they exhibited some pretty ugly plays that gave their opponents the Rangers ample opportunity to exploit.  Or that it even was a close-scoring game, as both teams exchanged goals in a see-saw battle that played itself out all the way into the two overtimes.

Plenty of oohs and aahs as both sides had near misses, posts hit, sure-fire gaping net goals that were somehow stopped via stick blade or other, etc.  The fact remains that the Senators with this win have taken the series lead, and unless the Rangers get some luck on their side, it ain't looking too good for them.

For Jean Gabriel Pageau, nothing could be sweeter.

NYRangers  4    Senators  5   OT    Ottawa leads series 3 games to 2.

After losing Game 4 in New York that enabled the Rangers to tie up the series and looking somewhat dispirited, the Ottawa Senators regrouped from those forgettable losses in Manhattan to come home and win Game 5 in OT and the series lead once again.

First, the Senators forward Derrick Brassard tied the game with  a llittle more than a minute left in the third period after the puck took some crazy bounces and with the empty-net for the extra man advantage.  Then, it became Kyle Turris' turn to win it in the first OT period as his wtist shot sent the puck between the pads of Rangers netminder Henrik Lundquist.  The Canadian Centre roared.

For a team that had no business even winning in this series, let alone the fact that Ottawa has lead for only thirteen minutes in this entire series,  overtime seems to spell wonders for them.

The Rangers will need to get back to basics or face elimination at MSG.

It really irks me that such a meh-Ottawa team is going to the conference finals. With that said, Erik Karlsson is definitely establishing himself as the best defenceman of his generation. And quite frankly it's not even that close really. I think in 20 years when we look back at his career anyone who disagreed with that now will probably pretend they never did.

Who said they didn't want two Karlssons on our defence again?

He's another glaring omission from the NHL Top 100.
