Blue And White Beat: NHL discipline is thoroughly perplexing

shanahan

One thing is clear from the abundance of thuggery in this year’s NHL playoffs. The application of supplemental discipline is as inconsistent as it has ever been.

Shortly after Carl Hagelin was given a three-game suspension for his head shot that knocked Senators captain out of Game 2 of the series, the Rangers issued a statement saying they were ‘thoroughly perplexed’ by VP of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan’s ruling.

The confusion isn’t limited to the Big Apple.

The Royals Review

(April 13)

READING, Pa. – The Reading Royals started the post-season on a hot streak, just as they finished the regular season. But despite a couple of wins at the start of the Kelly Cup playoffs, three straight losses in Elmira ended their season in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

TMLfans.ca Conference Quarter-Final playoff predictions

The NHL’s second season starts at 7:30pm Wednesday tonight. If you’re hitching your ride to the TMLfans.ca bandwagon, beware, this author was only 7-for-15 last year (you can always place your Pro-Line/fantasy wagers based on the opposite of what I’m picking).

Ten other things we’d like MLSE to apologize for

does-an-apology-mean-sorry

The apology for the horrid finish to the 2011/2012 season by MLSE Chairman Larry Tanenbaum got me thinking of a few other things I’d like Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment to apologize for.  Sure some of them took place before the MLSE era but I won’t let that stop me.

1.  Robert Reichel’s slap shot penalty shot

2. Never actually getting the future considerations for the trade of Larry Murphy. Frankly I would still call the Wings and ask for the considerations the team is owed.

3. Releasing Steve Sullivan, to make room for Dmitri Khristich.

4. Passing off Andrew Raycroft as a number one goalie. Not going to mention losing Tuukka Rask in said deal. Hmm guess I just did.

5. The 1989 Belleville Bulls first-round draft debacle.

6.  The Love Guru. Why let your sweater be showing in that disaster?

7. The jammed fax machine. (see Wanvig, Kyle).

8. Not signing Wayne Gretzky in 1996 when he wanted to be a Leaf.

9.  Trading what turned out to be Scott Niedermayer for Tom Kurvers.

10. The 80s. Yes the whole decade.

The Royals Review

(April 3)

READING, Pa. – Talk about cutting it close. The Reading Royals, ECHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs and Marlies, didn’t qualify for the Kelly Cup playoffs until 45 minutes after the end of their last regular season game. Now, they have a date with Eastern Conference champ Elmira in the first round of the post-season.

Ten Little Known Reasons for the Leafs’ Collapse

leafs_bag_head_

1. Team disappointed when they found out the Carlyle they were playing for was Randy and not Belinda.

2. Leafs are used to their season being over by spring. Thus, when Wiarton Willie called for an early spring, this was bound to happen.

3. Joffrey Lupul separated his shoulder…..carrying the team.

4. With the government cuts to the CBC, they figured most the games wouldn’t be televised so no one would notice.

5. Team confused about the whole DST thing. They fell back when they should have sprung ahead.

6. Let’s face it Tim Connolly only plays about 50 games every year. How was he supposed to know 82 games of effort is required.

7. Global Warming.

8. Hockey players are a superstitious bunch and didn’t want to break tradition by making the playoffs.

9. Warmer weather means more cars on the road, and we all know how Kessel feels about being in traffic.

10. They need more players from Ontario. Or at least that’s what I heard somewhere.
