Recap:

I couldn’t help but wonder if I might have this feeling next year with the Leafs. Holed up in the S-Mo blue and white fortress of solitude watching the proceedings at the Ricoh Coliseum today gave me some thrills and chills… is it possible la vie en bleu et blanc sanctum sanctorum could be rocking out any harder next season?

Yeah, it is.

Still, it was extremely exciting to watch a slice of the future of the big club determine their path in the second game of their opening round of the AHL playoffs against the Rochester Americans. 7,816 spinning white rally towels propelled their club, the rafters near bursting with fans. In fact Ricoh was shy only 324 bodies for their standing room only capacity of 8,140.

A common echo is that, once again, there is no playoff hockey in Toronto. 6,244 fans at Ricoh Coliseum disagree.

By locking up the second seed in the AHL’s Western Conference, the Marlies earned the privilege of choosing to open their best-of-five conference quarter-final against the Rochester Americans on home ice. The hometown fans did not go home disappointed. Jerry D’Amigo’s goal with 4:17 remaining in regulation was the game-winning marker in a 4-3 Toronto victory.

Jesse Blacker: The evolution of a hockey player

Feb. 25, 2012 by S-Mo

Jesse Blacker, taken in the 2nd round of the 2009 NHL entry draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, is making a case for himself as a pro and appears to be on the verge of taking the next step to the big league.

The 6’1”, 195 lb native of Toronto has been enjoying top minutes with one of the best defensive teams in the AHL, the Toronto Marlies, under the tutelege of coach Dallas Eakins and Gord Dineen among others. Whether applying his craft to sound positional play, learning the ropes in after hour sessions on the ice, reviewing tape or building his conditioning in the gym, Jesse is truly soaking up his experience and has little time for anything not hockey related.

Speaking with Jesse today we discussed some of his earlier triumphs, notably with the OHL champion Owen Sound Attack last year, and the learning curves and inspirations on the road to pro hockey.

Recap:
When the Toronto Marlies vaulted to a 3-0 lead over the Hamilton Bulldogs in a Boxing Day matchup at Air Canada Centre, the home team appeared on their way to a blowout.

Instead, the rivals from down the Queen Elizabeth Way responded by finding an extra gear, responding with six unanswered goals – including an empty-netter – on route to a 6-3 Hamilton win.

“A different team came on the ice,” said Marlies coach Dallas Eakins. “I thought we played so well in the first period, and we were dictating the game. We were dominating the game. I think we thought Hamilton was going to roll over and die. But these games are 60 minutes long, and Hamilton did not roll over and die.”

TMLfans Marlies Report: Kadri learning the virtues of patience

Nazem Kadri
The expectations surrounding Nazem Kadri can’t be understated.

To provide some perspective, consider that he is the highest Leafs forward drafted over the course of his entire lifetime.

Now 21 years of age and in his second season with the Marlies, Kadri has endured more than a fair dose of questions as to whether his playing career can continue in the tempest of the Toronto market. In 33 career Leafs games during which he has amassed just 13 points, the 2009 seventh-overall draft choice has shown flashes of creativity, but also a tendency to overextend his shifts compounded with a flawed defensive game.
