Recap:
There were two separate components to Tuesday night’s matchup between the Leafs and Devils at Air Canada Centre. The first piece was played out over the first period where the sluggish hosts were guilty of turnovers in their own end and appeared weary from playing in Manhattan the night before. The opportunistic Devils held a 2-0 lead on a pair of power-play goals after twenty minutes.

Toronto finally found their legs in the second period, outshooting their opponents 16-5 in the middle frame, and eventually tying the game early in the third period. But the Devils’ David Clarkson captured the extra point for his team by scoring his second of the game at 2:40 of overtime.

For the second consecutive visit to Manhattan, the Leafs triumphed 4-2 – having won by the same score on October 27. As was the case six weeks ago, Jonas Gustavsson was superb in the victory.

Leafs grouped with familiar rivals in realignment.

The NHL announced Monday a four-conference realignment plan that replaces the current two-conference, six-division structure.

Under the new format that goes into effect in 2012-13, Toronto is grouped with current NorthEast division opponents Boston, Buffalo, Montreal and Ottawa, as well as Florida and Tampa Bay.

With the revision, each team in the NHL plays at least once at home and once on the road against every other team in the league.

The teams in each of the two 7-team conferences, including the Leafs, play each of their opponents within the conference 6 times, split evenly between home and away.

The top four teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs.

The Royals Review

(November 29)

READING, Pa. – Two steps forward and one step back. Or perhaps, one step forward and two to the rear. Both those statements sum up the first quarter of the Reading Royals’ ECHL season. The affiliate of the Maple Leafs and Marlies has stumbled to a 7-8-3 record to start the year and although it’s good enough for second place in the Atlantic Division, it’s been anything but impressive. A 2-6 mark at home to start the schedule is particularly troubling. Continue Reading…

Saturday’s defeat at the hands of the Boston Bruins was just the latest chapter in a script that Leafs fans have witnessed so many times.

No matter how the team in blue and white is performing, there’s always that pesky divisional rival that just gets in their face. Whether the Leafs are winning or losing that same opponent presents a challenge that seems insurmountable.
