Leafs crash Red Wings party, win season-opener

The Detroit Red Wings raised their Stanley Cup banner on Thursday night, but it was the Maple Leafs who were celebrating at game’s end. Toronto’s spirited effort vaulted them to a 3-2 victory in their opening game of the 2008-09 season, giving head coach Ron Wilson his first win behind the bench with his new club.

Pavel Kubina and Dominic Moore scored the Leafs’ first two goals while rookie Nikolai Kulemin notched the game-winner on a breakaway, pouncing on a turnover by the Wings’ Daniel Cleary.

Defenceman Luke Schenn had a solid game in his NHL debut, logging 17:20 of ice time and being credited with 3 hits.

The Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens in their home opener on Saturday.

Season begins tonight in Detroit

The opening game of what has been termed the Leafs’ “rebuilding era” takes place to night at Joe Louis Arena. Toronto visits Detroit to open their 2008-09 season.

Coach Ron Wilson will have his troops out on the ice when the Wings raise their 2008 Stanley Cup banner before an ecstatic crowd in Motown.

Schenn signs; Leafs trim roster

18-year-old Luke Schenn officially puts the ink on a three-year entry level deal.

The Leafs opening day roster will not include Mark Bell – who cleared waivers – or Boyd Devereaux or Staffan Kronwall, who will both be Toronto Marlies if left unpicked off the waiver wire by 12 noon today.

Schenn, John Mitchell, and Ian White in his new forward role have made the team.

Kronwall, Devereaux placed on waivers

The Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Staffan Kronwall and forward Boyd Devereaux on waivers. Both players are destined for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, should they remain unclaimed.

Devereaux collected 18 points in 62 games with the Leafs last year.

Kronwall split his time between the Leafs and Marlies in 2007-08, not registering a point in 18 games played last year in the NHL.

Schenn makes Leafs lineup; Wilson not focussed on win-loss record

Luke Schenn will be on the Leafs’ starting roster when the team opens the season in Detroit on Thursday night.

Head coach Ron Wilson goes on record as saying that wins and losses don’t matter, as far as the forthcoming season for his ‘rebuilding’ team is concerned.

Bell waived – Hollweg suspended

The Maple Leafs have placed forward Mark Bell on waivers. Bell, who was acquired in the same trade that brought Vesa Toskala to the Leafs in 2007, had 10 points in 35 games for the Leafs last season.

In other Leafs news, forward Ryan Hollweg earned an automatic suspension as a result of his boarding penalty assessed in a pre-season game against St. Louis last week. The two-game suspension come as a result of Hollweg having accumulated three boarding penalties in the past 41 games.
