Salary and roster data has been updated (finally!)

The team roster and salary cap information has now finally been updated.

The current salary cap and payroll commitments now reflect the “normal” roster after the St Louis trade (Steen and Colaiacovo for Stempniak) and Stralman’s transfer to the Marlies.

After accounting for the players currently on the IR and called up, it seems as though the Leafs are running with a 22-man roster, which means that Burke has left himself a free roster spot to showcase an extra Marlie (as he is currently doing) or perhaps to ensure that he has the available roster spot in case a player of interest is placed on waivers by another team.

I should point out that the cap totals reflect the players currently on the roster, but do not reflect the exact, actual team cap situation. For instance, there will be some additional cap cost associated with the days that Steen and Colaiacovo were on the Leafs roster, and a corresponding cap reduction to Stempniak’s cap hit for the days when he was on the Blues’ roster. Similarly, various players have been on the IR — with Marlies called up to replace them — which affects the actual cap situation. Further, there have been several roster moves (Tlusty and Stralman to the Marlies, etc.) which are accounted on a daily basis and aren’t reflected here.

The bottom line: the cap hit and cap space shown should be treated only as a very rough approximation.

The Leafs Active Roster has also been updated to reflect the approximate current roster, but the line combinations should be taken with a grain of salt. As we’ve seen, coach Ron Wilson doesn’t hesitate to shuffle the deck both in practice and during the games, so it’s almost impossible to present anything that’s completely accurate (or at least we’d need someone updating it full time, which isn’t currently the case).

At present my schedule doesn’t allow me to maintain a completely current, daily update of the data, but it is my hope that I’ll be able to make monthly updates to both posts. Please bear that in mind when reviewing them. I’ll include a “last updated” line to let you know when the last update was made. I expect to do the next update sometime in early-to-mid January. Thanks for your understanding.

Bruins power past Mats-less Leafs, and other Friday news

The Toronto media has two juicy stories to focus on this morning: the 8-5 drubbing that the Leafs suffered last night at the hands of the Bruins, and the late Thursday news that former Leafs captain Mats Sundin has signed with the Canucks.

It was a wild affair last night in Beantown. All four goalies got into the game (Vesa even got in twice!), 22 different players recorded at least a point, and if you’re a fan of tight-checking, defensive games, you probably didn’t enjoy this one.

Yes, Mats has finally decided to play this season, and the lucky recipient of his talent is the Vancouver Canucks. Read all you want (and probably more than you want) in the links below.

Several (current) Leafs managed to garner mention in the press: The Sun has a piece on Mike Van Ryn (who was injured again in last night’s game with another concussion) and Marlie call-up Jeremy Williams, while the NHL Northeast Notebook has a prominent feature on Ian White’s versatility.

In spite of all the hoopla about Mats, the press also found space to report that the players for the Top Prospects game have been decided (Tavares and Ellis to headline) and devoted a few inches of space to Canada’s upcoming WJC team.

We close out with Burke being a little upset with the Canucks organization, and no, it has nothing to do with Mats. Check it out!

Much ado about Avery; Leafs-Yotes preview; and Canada’s WJC team top Thursday stories

The Leafs will end their three day western road trip as they visit Gretzky’s Phoenix Coyotes tonight and you can add the Great One to the growing list of knowledgeable hockey people who are fans of the Leafs’ Luke Schenn.

The NHL has suspended Avery indefinitely and summoned him to a meeting with Bettman and Campbell following some tasteless remarks he made prior to the Stars’ game in Calgary. Not surprisingly, this has lead to a multitude of people weighing in on the situation. The links below are only a few of the many stories out there, but are probably the “best” in terms of getting an overview of the situation.

Fortunately the news isn’t all about Avery. Next week Team Canada will announce the 38-player training camp roster for the World Junior Championships that are held at Christmastime — hosted in Ottawa this year — and there are a variety of stories about the embarrassment of riches at Pat Quinn’s disposal this year.

And finally, former Leafs head coach Paul Maurice has a new gig (or a new old one, if you prefer) as the Hurricanes announced yesterday that Laviolette has been fired and the former coach has been retained to guide the team five years after his previous release.

All that, and more, in today’s hockey headlines…

It’s official – Schenn to remain with Leafs

Multiple news sources are reporting that Toronto Maple Leafs head coach, Ron Wilson, sat down with Luke Schenn after Monday’s team practice to give him some good news and some bad news.

The bad news? Luke would have to move out of the Toronto area hotel he’s been staying in for the last month or so. The young Leaf prospect would no longer be able to order room service or have nice clean linen every day.

The good? The reason for his eviction is that he needs to retain a real estate agent to help him find new, permanent digs in the city because he’s sticking with the club.

Schenn will suit up for his 9th regular season game as a Maple Leaf tomorrow when his team hosts the Tampa Bay Lightning. After the game, the team flies to New Jersey to face Brodeur and the Devils on Wednesday night. The second the clock starts ticking, Schenn’s entry level SPC will kick in for the full season. Should he remain with the club beyond the 41 game mark — and there’s little reason to suspect otherwise — it will also count as a full year of service toward Schenn’s status as a player. Assuming he remains healthy and assigned to the club, he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at age 25.

Schenn came into training camp considered by most to be very unlikely to cement a roster spot. After all, to earn that spot he would have to prove himself worthy of top-4 ice time, and that would not be easy with the Leafs roster already chock full of defencemen with NHL experience. Anything less, and Schenn would be sent back for one more year of Junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets.

“Lockdown Luke,” as he has affectionately come to be known on the TMLfans forum, has met and exceeded all expectations. He has averaged more than 20 minutes per night of ice time and has seen regular duty as a top-pairing partner for Tomas Kaberle, as well as a prominent role on the team’s penalty killing unit. He has also been entrusted to hold the lead in the closing minutes of many of the Leafs’ recent games.

Super Saturday in the NHL as Battle of Ontario resumes

For only the second time in NHL history all 30 teams will be playing on “Super Saturday”. If you need a dose of hockey, today’s the day to get it.

The “Battle of Ontario” resumes as the Leafs host the Sens at the ACC tonight; but, with all the new faces in the Leafs dressing room, is that rivalry waning? We’ll find out tonight.

The Leafs have sent Tlusty to the Marlies to make room on the roster for summer UFA acquisition, defenceman Jeff Finger, to make his debut in a Leaf uniform. This gives the Buds nine healthy, NHL level blueliners, prompting speculation that GM Cliff Fletcher will need to make a move soon to address the over-crowded situation.

Oh, and if you’re the VP of Operations for an NHL franchise, you might want to think twice before inviting vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin to come to your rink to do the ceremonial puck drop. All this, and more, in today’s round-up.

Leafs host Habs in home opener tonight

The Leafs will host the Canadiens in their home opener, with the 49th Highlanders doing their traditional piping in of the season.

After beating the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings on Thursday’s season opener, the mood in the Leafs dressing room is upbeat. Some team shinanigans have coach Ron Wilson looking for a new pair of shoes and a new stick…though he warns that the pranksters might be opening a dangerous can of worms.

The Marlies dropped their home opener last night in a shootout. All in all the team looked good and there are many positive signs as the seek to repeat as division champs.

Recent financial woes may have significant impact on the 30-team league, but the players received some positive news: they’ll be getting all of last year’s escrow payments back in a bonus cheque early this season.
