Couch’s Corner: Boston Loss, Phaneuf, More

Another loss for the Leafs, who played host to the Bruins Sunday evening.  It was a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Boston.

The Leafs actually had a decent first period, but their play weakened as the game went on.  Same can be said for the Bruins – both teams have significant injuries. for the Leafs – veterans Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf both had weak games with many ill-timed mistakes.

The Bruins scored two power-play goals while the Leafs went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

Jonathan Bernier went the distance for the Leafs facing 38 shots.

The Sunday evening game was rare for the Leafs. They hadn’t played a Sunday evening regular-season game in over 10 years.

Phaneuf could face discipline for hit…

Phaneuf crushed Bruins defenceman Kevan Miller face-first against the boards.  Phaneuf made contact with Miller’s right shoulder but received no hit-from-behind or boarding penalty.

It’s expected Phaneuf will face a telephone interview into the matter.

Cool Stat…

Trevor Smith made his Maple Leafs debut on Oct. 8 vs. Colorado and became the 900th player to play at least one game in Toronto franchise history.
