Seesaw matchup ends with Leafs shootout win

The Leafs earned their first shootout win in four attempts this season, winning an entertaining game in New Jersey on Wednesday by a score of 6-5. The back-and-forth game saw the lead change on three occassions, generating ten goals in a matchup that was not predicted to produce a lot of offence.

Matt Stajan led the way with two goals and an assist. Alex Steen and Jamal Mayers both scored their first goal of the year while Alexei Ponikarovsky also found the net. The Leafs were 3-for-4 on the power-play, with two of those goals coming within a 3:18 stretch in the second period in which they scored three times to take a 3-2 lead.

Tomas Kaberle and Niklas Hagman both scored in the shootout.

Toronto’s next game is Saturday when they host the New York Rangers.
