Rangers edge Leafs in shootout

The New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs played to a 0-0 stalemate after 65 minutes of play at Madison Square Garden on Friday. For the second consecutive game, Nikolai Kulemin was the only Leaf to beat the opposing goalie in the shootout in a Toronto defeat.

The Rangers’ Fredrik Sjostrom scored the shootout winner in the 1-0 win.

Despite going goalless in regulation, both teams had numerous scoring chances with Toronto’s Dominic Moore hitting the goal post early in the first period. The Leafs held off a Rangers surge in the third period as Toronto spent much of the final frame on the penalty kill.

Both goalies Vesa Toskala and Stephen Valiquette are credited with shutouts, even though only Valiquette is credited with a victory.

Toronto heads to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins on Saturday.
