Leafs crash Red Wings party, win season-opener

The Detroit Red Wings raised their Stanley Cup banner on Thursday night, but it was the Maple Leafs who were celebrating at game’s end. Toronto’s spirited effort vaulted them to a 3-2 victory in their opening game of the 2008-09 season, giving head coach Ron Wilson his first win behind the bench with his new club.

Pavel Kubina and Dominic Moore scored the Leafs’ first two goals while rookie Nikolai Kulemin notched the game-winner on a breakaway, pouncing on a turnover by the Wings’ Daniel Cleary.

Defenceman Luke Schenn had a solid game in his NHL debut, logging 17:20 of ice time and being credited with 3 hits.

The Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens in their home opener on Saturday.

  1. Nice showing by the Leafs last night and thank god Toskala was in net and it’s also a good thing they decided not to expand the nets, cause the Wed Rings had quite a few pucks deflect off the iron.

Liked the looks of the lines, and since they won I imagine they’ll remain the same on Satruday vs. the Habs, unless of course an injury bug hits.
What I’d like to see is Tlusty with the Twin Towers Antropov and Ponikarovsky.
Stajan between Steen and Blake, Grabovsky centering Kulemin and Hagman and finally Moore lining up with Mayers and Mitchell or Hollweg.

One note on your roster, Stralman didn’t dress and instead Mike Van Ryn started the game with Frogren. Has anybody read yet who the 5 rotating Assistant Captains are? Kaberle, Kubina, Mayers Antropov and Hagman?? Hard to believe that Stajan didn’t get the nod, they could have easily had 6 A’s. Also, am I the only one who heard on Hockey Central that Toskala’s name was listed as the Captain on the Roster sheet? Is that true or were they just joking with the fact that Loungo is Captain of the Canucks?
