Wings outlast Leafs in Motown

The Detroit Red Wings posted a 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena, fending off the charges of the visiting side who twice had rallied to tie the game. Defensive turnovers were the Leafs’ nemesis, with the winning goal scored by Johan Franzen at 18:03 of the third period shortly after Nik Antropov coughed up the puck at the Toronto blueline.

The Leafs’ Ian White was shifted from defence to right wing and fit nicely alongside linemates Matt Stajan and Alex Steen.

Steen, Jiri Tlusty and Mikhail Grabovski were the Leafs goal scorers, while Vesa Toskala went the distance in net. The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Air Canada Centre.

Forward Lines: Ponikarovsky-Antropov-Blake, Stajan-Steen-White,Tlusty-Mitchell-Grabovski, Rogers-Devereaux-Bell

Defence pairings: Colaiacovo-Van Ryn, Stralman-Frogren, Kronwall-Sifers
Goaltenders: Toskala (L 59:53, 28 SV, 4 GA ), Pogge (0:00), (empty net, 1 GA)
