Wolves overpower Marlies; one game away from sweep

The Toronto Marlies are one game away from being swept out of the Calder Cup playoffs after falling 4-1 to the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday at Ricoh Coliseum.  Each of the Wolves' goals were scored on the power-play, which was 4-for-10 on the evening and now 6-for-25 in the series.  The Marlies trail the Western Conference FInal three games to none.

Toronto forward Kris Newbury, who entered the game as the AHL's playoff leader this season in penalty minutes, was partly miffed at the officiating, and also disappointed in his team's lack of discipline.  "Referees are taking their toll in this series for sure," said Newbury.    "It seems that they are getting all the calls, and all the calls are going against us.  But, we've got to be better on special teams, and be more disciplined.  For me it's frustrating, always watching the calls go the other way.  When you see that, it's tough, and it's something that I have to work on personally."

Head coach Greg Gilbert seemed bewildered at both his team's continued habit of taking bad penalties, but also at lopsided number of calls in the Wolves favour.  "I guess a lot of guys on our team don't learn about staying out of the penalty box.  There were some undisciplined calls, but there were some calls that you really wonder about."  Gilbert referred to an apparent phantom call on David Ling for slashing in the first period, and also a non-call when defenceman Jay Harrison appeared to be hooked.

Chris Harrington had the only goal for the Marlies.

2,573 fans were in attendance.  The Marlies will try to stave off elimination on Wednesday in Game #4 of the series at Ricoh.
