Marlies are in a hole; trail 2-0 in series

The Toronto Marlies generated 45 shots at Syracuse goalie Karl Goehring, but still dropped the second game of the North Division Final by a score of 3-1. The Marlies now trail the best-of-seven series 2-0, heading to Syracuse.

Toronto took a pair of penalties in the first 1:07 of the game, surrendering the opening goal while killing a 5-on-3 power-play.  "We've gotten ourselves in trouble with penalties throughout the playoffs," said Bates Battaglia, who had the Marlies only goal.  "That's something we've been trying to get away from, and that definitely hurt us a little bit, tonight."

Despite the loss, coach Greg Gilbert was upbeat as he addressed reporters, characterizing his team as having played a much better game than in the opener.  "I thought we worked hard, and we did create some chances, and obviously weren't able to capitalize.  It's unfortunate - being down 5-on-3 early in the game.

"Overall, our effort was good...but we need more.  We have to sacrifice more, win the little battles more, and find ways to put pucks in the net."

The series shifts to Syracuse for the next two games, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Forward lines: Tlusty-Mitchell-Ondrus, Battaglia-Newbury-Ling, Leveille-Foster-Harrington,  Aubin/Rogers
Defence pairings: Harrison-Sifers, Wozniewski-Muir, Kronwall-Walser, Oreskovic
Goaltenders: Clemmensen (L 59:25, 26 SV, 2 GA), Pogge (0:00), (empty net, 1 GA)
