San Antonio spurs to easy victory over Marlies
The Toronto Marlies were thumped 6-3 by the San Antonio Rampage on Friday night in the second game of the North Division Semi-Final. The series is now even at one game each.
After the Rampage scored three goals in a 3:12 span in the second period to make the score 4-0, goaltender Scott Clemmensen was pulled in favour of Justin Pogge, who made his first AHL playoff appearance.
"There were a lot of breakdowns in our end, and a lot of bad decisions," reflected Clemmensen. "We weren't really supporting the puck, and that left our guys who did have the puck hanging out to dry."
Ben Ondrus, Jay Harrison scored the first two Marlies goals while Bates Battaglia had a highlight reel shorthanded marker in the third period.
A turnover by Harrison led to the first of the goals that were scored in the Rampage's three-minute, twelve-second rally. "It was a domino effect, they took advantage of an opportunity and ran with it, and we didn't overcome the resistance to overcome the pressure that they put on us," said the Marlies defenceman.
Meanwhile a disappointed coach Greg Gilbert would not name a starting goalie for Game #3 of the series, but seemed to be leaning toward Clemmensen. "The reason that I pulled Scott was because he was getting shelled," explained the Marlies bench boss. "I haven't made the decision for the third game yet, but chances are that Clemmensen will go back in."
Chad Kolarik had a hat trick for the Rampage, while ex-Marlie Brendan Bell collected two assists. 3,367 fans were in attendance at Ricoh Coliseum.
The series shifts to San Antonio for three games, beginning on Monday night.
Forward lines: Tlusty-Mitchell-Ondrus, Murphy-Foster-Harrington, Battaglia-Newbury-Ling, Leveille-Gillati-Aubin
