The Maple Leafs’ four-game road trip came to a merciful end with a 6-4 defeat to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
In an oft-repeated theme, defensive miscues were ultimately the undoing of coach Mike Babcock’s squad, which lost for the fifth time in six games and came away with just a single victory during their four-game swing.
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the second period, St. Louis defenders Joel Edmundson and Alex Pietrangelo scored within three minutes, each taking advantage of some atrocious coverage in the Leafs’ zone. Compounding matters, Magnus Paajarvi all but put the game out of reach in the third frame after pouncing on a giveaway by Nazem Kadri.
Tyler Bozak scored a pair of goals for Toronto. Andreas Borgman and Connor Brown had the other Leafs’ goals, and Frederik Andersen made 26 saves in the defeat.
