The Maple Leafs were defeated 3-2 by the San Jose Sharks on Monday night at SAP Center. It was the third straight defeat for Toronto, who has now dropped four of its past five games.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 36 saves in the loss, which could have been more lopsided if not for his efforts. Toronto’s goals were scored by Auston Matthews and Andreas Borgman. Matthews opened the scoring in the first period with a creative play to kick the puck to his stick as he was skating cross-ice in front of the Sharks net before registering his ninth goal of the season.
Leafs forward Patrick Marleau was honoured in a pre-game ceremony. It was Marleau’s first game versus the Sharks – the team that originally drafted him – after a 19-season tenure in San Jose. He remains the franchise’s all-time scoring leader.
