Game Day…

The Leafs host New Jersey this evening.  The Leafs, of course, are riding a 3-0 record to start the season.  The Devils are 2-0.  Expected goalies are Cory Schneider versus Freddie Andersen.  Game time is 7:30pm on Sportsnet, MSG and the Fan 590.

Things To Watch…

  • The Leafs have scored an NHL-high six power play goals in 16 opportunities.
  • 19-year old rookie Jesper Bratt, a 6th round pick by the Devils in 2016, is leading the way for the Devils with 5 points in New Jersey’s 2 games.
  • Sportsnets’ Chris Simpson sits down with Devils’ top draft pick Nico Hischier to talk life in the NHL. It’ll be on tonight during the broadcast.
  • Ron Hainsey is averaging 7:28 in shorthanded ice time through three games this season, which leads all NHLers.

Interesting Stat…

Tonight is the 6500th  game in Maple Leafs franchise history.

More On Stats…

Can’t quite figure out what the various stat headings mean?  Here’s a fantastic explanation:

Leafs Boosting Business…

Here’s a video explaining how the impressive start is boosting the business around them:

Scoring Is Up…

I think it was Nik Kypreos suggesting that scoring is up in the NHL – by around a ½ goal per game.  A big part of that, and I agree with him, is that slashing calls have went through the roof.  With that, players are crossing the blueline quickly and the defense aren’t able to use the lumber on them.  This is huge for guys like Auston Matthews, who uses his speed to run for the net.

Honouring Vegas…

Golden Knights players and staff were joined by first responders as they took the ice for the first time at T-Mobile Arena; members of the Coyotes also stood in unity behind the Golden Knights for the duration of the pre-game ceremony. It was a moving moment.

Leafs Jerseys Cheap…

Jeff Veillette, on Twitter, tells us that If you don’t mind the old Leafs logo, hit up your local Winners/Marshalls stores.  Replicas are on for $39, and Edges for $69.
