Couch’s Corner: Oct 10, 2017

The Goal…
It’s a shot that not many NHL goalies could stop. Auston Matthews’ bullet snipe at 3:43 of overtime gave the Leafs an impessive victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Monday evening. It’ll make most sports shows weekly top 10 moments for this past week. The win put the rest of the league on notice – this Leafs squad can play with the top teams.

Man of the Matrch…
How about Connor Brown’s play to start the season. He’s hustling, hitting, grinding in the corners… Against the Hawks, Brown picked up an assist on Nakita Zaitsev’s goal, as well his own goal. In the post-game media scrum, Coach Babcock mentioned that the Brown goal was the one that got the team’s “energy back.” On any other team, Brown would likely slide into the second or third line, but on a deep Leafs roster, he’s on the fourth line to start the season.

Straight to the Point…
Here’s a stat that impresses me. Eric Fehr is the only Leafs skater who has not notched a point in the first three games.  It’s not a knock on Fehr.  Gotta love seeing the scoring spread around through all four lines. Opposing teams are finding it hard to know which line to match against.

Sticking It To The Habs…
The Canadiens must be scratching their heads, wondering which hockey God they pissed off. This past Sunday, they faced a Rangers squad that had just been beaten the night before by the Leafs. And tonight they face a Blackhawks team that are coming off a loss to the Leafs. Both the Rangers and Hawks were/are hungry for a win. Habs are in tough this season.

Did You Know…
The Maple Leafs have scored 19 goals, their second-highest total through the first three games of a season in franchise history.

10th Anniversary Winter Classic…
The NHL announced yesterday that tickets to the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic – between the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers, in New York – will go on sale to the public on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 10:00 AM via Ticketmaster.
